The Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work, abbreviation SASW at Texas Tech University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Sociology position to begin September 1, 2019.  We are looking for a scholar whose primary area of interest is the sociology of health/medical sociology. Preference will be given to scholars of health or medicine who also focus on social inequality.  While a PhD in Sociology is preferred, a PhD in related fields such as Demography or Public Health with the ability to teach sociology classes will be considered.  The successful candidate is a researcher who can establish an outstanding, externally funded research program in their research area.  This candidate should be able to contribute to the curriculum by teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses in the sociology of health/medical sociology and inequality.  S/he should also be able to develop courses related to his or her specializations, mentor graduate students, and involve graduate and undergraduate students in research.  Service duties include program building, as well as commitment to extra-curricular activities.  Service to the department, college, and university is expected.  Texas Tech is a Carnegie Tier One university. 

Required Qualifications 

PhD in Sociology or related field at the time of the appointment is required.  ABDs will be considered.  Demonstrated evidence of research, including a publication record and an active research agenda, is required. 

Preferred Qualifications 

Candidates with teaching experience and demonstrated teaching effectiveness are preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with a record of scholarly publication and external funding.  Experience working with diverse student populations and first-generation students is highly desirable.

The sociology program in the Department of SASW has 10 full-time tenured and tenure-track sociologists and offers both Bachelors and Masters degrees.
