Assistant Professor of History

The Department of History at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in early American history at the assistant professor level beginning July 1, 2019.

The teaching load will include both semesters of U.S. history, as well as advanced elective courses in U.S. history before 1865. Strong preference will be given to candidates with research interests and teaching experience in the following areas: African-American history, the history of slavery, and/or comparative race relations. Additional consideration will be given to candidates whose courses also contribute to the university’s interdisciplinary programs (Gender & Women’s Studies, International Studies, and Environmental Studies). The position carries a teaching load of three courses per semester, and requires ongoing scholarly activity in the form of publications and presentations. Other duties include advising students, supervising students doing senior projects, and participating in department and university service.

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements: Ph.D. in history in-hand by July 1, 2019, evidence of scholarly promise, and an excellent record of teaching at the undergraduate level. Applicants must also demonstrate a clear understanding of and commitment to teaching excellence and innovation at a liberal arts institution.
