The Department of English at Illinois State University located in Normal, Illinois, invites applications for a ten-month tenure-track Advanced Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor to serve as the Director of the Illinois State University Writing Program (www.isuwriting.com). Successful candidates should be able to articulate their research, administrative, and teaching expertise in socio-cultural and/or cultural-historical approaches to the study and teaching of writing, and interests in multi-literacy approaches, such as community-based literacies, multimodal literacies, translingual literacies, and rhetorical genre studies.

The selected candidate will join an internationally recognized English Studies faculty, and will serve as the Director of our Writing Program, which was named a “program of excellence” by the Conference of College Composition and Communication in 2015. The candidate will also build strength in the area of Composition Studies (both the teaching of writing and the study of how human beings compose), and will engage graduate and undergraduate students in the study and practice of writing and reading competencies that extend beyond classroom-based learning. Additionally, this position will build connections between the areas of Composition Studies, English Education, ESL/TESOL, Rhetoric, and Technical Communication. This position offers a 1-1 teaching load with a competitive salary.

 Requirements for this position are:

  • An earned doctorate in Rhetoric and Composition, Writing Studies, or closely-related field such as TESOL or English Education.
  • Experience in Writing Program Administration or other types of program administration.
  • Evidence of promising scholarship in rhetoric and composition/writing studies, especially in the teaching of writing and study of evolving literacies.
  • A record of successful teaching.
  • Oral proficiency in the English language, as mandated by state law.

The Department of English Studies is committed to increasing the diversity of our campus community. ISU recognizes that a diverse faculty, staff, and student body enriches the educational experiences of the entire campus and greater community. Candidates who have experience working with a diverse range of faculty, staff, and students, and who can contribute to the climate of inclusivity are especially welcomed to apply. Women, veterans, persons with disabilities, and people of color are encouraged to apply.

To ensure full consideration, please complete and submit electronically the standard Illinois State University job application at https://www.jobs.ilstu.edu

All application materials are due by October 15, 2018; the review of applications will continue until the position is filled. Interviews of selected applicants will be conducted via Skype or telephone. The appointment begins August 1, 2019.
