The English Department at Seattle University invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Creative Writing with a concentration in Poetry, especially New Media Poetics.   Appointment begins September 2019.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated interest and ability in new media poetics (forms at the intersection of traditional text and various kinetic, visual, and sonic digital forms that may include cinematic and interactive user arrangements). They will also have a knowledge of poetic forms and their histories, as well as a demonstrated ability to teach the writing and analysis of poetry as a form and genre in continuous conversation.

The English Department and Creative Writing program are committed to intersectional teaching, scholarship, and community building, and Seattle University serves a diverse undergraduate community in the heart of Seattle, WA. Preferred candidates will demonstrate an ability to develop students’ creative writing skills and personal voices as they examine their own and others’ contexts, and an ability to collaborate with colleagues in the development of courses focused on the intersection of aesthetics, emerging technologies, and social justice. The new hire’s responsibilities include teaching, creative/scholarly production, and service. Other responsibilities include work on the visiting writer series and student-led literature and arts journal Fragments.

 Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or M.F.A. in Creative Writing or related field–with poetry as a concentration. Evidence of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level. A record of publications, performances, and/or exhibits representative of the position. The ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates who bring the potential to teach form and theory and special topics courses that include a diversity of cultural and ethnic perspectives, including African American, Latinx, Native American, or Asian American, or global perspectives as they intersect with local perspectives. Preference will also be given to candidates who show experience working with students whose narratives are underrepresented in academia and the publishing world.
