FULL-TIME FACULTY POSITION IN ART & TECHNOLOGY STUDIES

The Department of Art and Technology Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty position, beginning in August of 2019. Rank and salary are competitive with peer institutions and are commensurate with quality of practice, scholarship, academic research, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.

DEPARTMENTAL PROFILE

Art and Technology Studies (ATS) curriculum focuses on the use of technology as an artistic medium. Works produced in the Art and Technology Studies Department are often time-based, interactive, immersive, and multi-sensory, and use hybrids of retro and cutting-edge technologies. In its current configuration, ATS teaches numerous courses in the following disciplines: programming, light, kinetics and electronics, audio, augmented reality, virtual reality and game design, bio art, and the history and theory of these disciplines. The department also teaches courses in exploratory areas that fall outside of these disciplines, such as poetic systems and olfactory art. The Department of Art and Technology Studies is chaired by a full-time faculty member with five full-time faculty and 15 part-time faculty. RESPONSIBILITIES

Full-time faculty in the Department of Art and Technology Studies teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students of diverse backgrounds within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. This faculty position will provide leadership in one or more of the department's areas of focus: bio art, gaming, virtual reality and augmented reality, kinetics, electronics, mechatronics and robotics, interactive and responsive art, emerging materials and digital fabrication, DIY, open source and community-based art, experimental visualization and object-making, light and neon, social and locative media, networks, and other technology-centered practices. The faculty member will teach in areas that contribute to the general goals of the department as well as in their area of specialization; take a leadership role in forging the future of the department; participate in student advising, admissions events, committee work, and special projects; contribute to the SAIC community through ongoing curricular development; and participate in departmental administration and school governance.

QUALIFICATIONS

An MFA or a terminal degree in a relevant field of study is preferred. Significant teaching experience is preferred. The department seeks artists who work directly with new technologies, such as code, software, hardware, bio art, and/or various forms of emerging technologies. It is important that candidates demonstrate their integration of skills with a strong conceptual and historical grasp of contemporary issues in the intersecting worlds of art, science, technology, and new media. Given its position in an art school with an interdisciplinary focus, the Department of Art and Technology Studies is committed to alternative forms and practices that emphasize innovation. We recognize that current artistic practices combine media within several modes of exhibition, including but not limited to galleries, museums, theaters, festivals, podcasts, websites, workshops, and urban spaces. The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and practices in the field of Art and Technology Studies. We seek candidates with the knowledge and aptitude to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates should demonstrate their experience with, or aptitude for, departmental administration.
