The English Department at Saint Mary's College of California invites applications for a tenure-track position in Rhetoric and Composition at the Assistant Professor level with expertise in Professional and/or Technical Writing. Additional areas of expertise could include science and health writing, business writing, writing for the media, or writing for social justice. Experience teaching diverse student populations is preferred.

Qualifications
Faculty Qualifications:
Required: PhD in Rhetoric and Composition or a related field, or doctoral candidacy with expectation by June 1, 2019; demonstrated commitment to student-centered teaching in the liberal arts tradition; evidence of teaching effectiveness and experience teaching first-year composition; interest and ability in developing new curriculum in professional and/or technical writing; a promising scholarly agenda and/or scholarly publications in professional or technical writing.

Preferred: Demonstrated commitment and success working in diverse, multicultural contexts, especially in higher education.

The College has been designated a Minority- and Hispanic-Serving Institution; many Saint Mary's students are first-generation-to-college. Successful candidates must be able to engage and support students of color, women, and other underrepresented groups, and will be interested in participating in initiatives that aim to increase inclusivity.

Faculty Responsibilities:
The English Department, the largest in the School of Liberal Arts, offers undergraduate courses in literature, creative writing, and composition. Consistent with the College's commitment to inclusive excellence, we strive to be an inclusive community fostering respect and belonging for faculty and students of diverse backgrounds and identities.

The standard teaching assignment is six courses annually; the position includes courses in first-year composition and courses in the candidate's area(s) of expertise as well as undergraduate courses in the Collegiate Seminar Program and the January Term. There will be opportunities for course, program, and faculty development. Expected starting date is July 1, 2019. Saint Mary's faculty are expected to maintain an active scholarly agenda and demonstrate intellectual growth and significant achievement appropriate to their field. Faculty also contribute to the mission and serve the College and community in many ways, including academic advising, student and community outreach, participation in departmental and College-wide committees, and the development and assessment of the College's Core Curriculum.
