Spanish is required. Evidence of promise in scholarship and a PhD
in French, Spanish, or a related field is required. Pitzer College
has developed a nationally recognized community-based language
learning approach that strengthens ties with neighboring
communities, virtual communities, and study abroad sites. Thus,
candidates with a teaching and research record and interests in the
intersection of language, community engagement, study abroad
experiences, and global/local issues offer a desired
asset.
In addition to maintaining an active research agenda, the
successful candidate‘s
responsibilities in teaching, curriculum, and program development
will include:
• Teaching a total of five courses per year as needed, both
lower-division French and Spanish language courses, and
upper-division courses in the area of Latin American and Caribbean
Studies taught in French and/or Spanish;
• Developing a standards-based communicative French language
curriculum in close collaboration with the intercollegiate French
program and contributing to the existing Spanish language and
culture curriculum;
• Participating in curricular design, development of pedagogical
materials, professional development in proficiency-based language
pedagogy and assessment;
• Designing an integrated virtual community-based curricular
component for French language students; and
• Taking an active role in student advising and serving in college
governance.
Collaboration is highly recommended with the Chicana/o Latina/o
Transnational Studies field group, the Gender and Feminist Studies
program and the intercollegiate departments of Africana Studies and
Latin American Studies.
The successful candidate may establish affiliations with one of
several Intercollegiate Departments (Africana Studies, Asian
American Studies, Chican@/Latin@ Studies) and/or the
Intercollegiate Feminist Center for Teaching, Research and
Engagement. Pitzer College has a strong institutional commitment to
diversity in all areas and strongly encourages candidates from
underrepresented groups. We favor candidates who can contribute to
the College’s distinctive educational objectives, which promote
interdisciplinary perspectives, intercultural understanding, and
concern with social responsibility and the ethical implications of
knowledge and action. Pitzer College is an Affirmative Action/Equal
Opportunity Employer.
A complete application will include a cover letter, curriculum
vitae, selected evidence of excellence in teaching and research,
statement of teaching philosophy, a research statement and three
letters of recommendation. Candidates should also submit a
statement in which they address how their cultural, experiential,
and/or academic background contributes to the understanding of
diversity at the College. The deadline for
