The newly restructured School of Education at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is seeking a dynamic individual to serve as the Director and to lead this organizational transition to build a cohesive school. Standards-based programs are delivered through campus­ based, distance delivery, partnership, and other models. The School has 22 full time faculty, supported by 12 full time staff. The University of Alaska Anchorage is a growing, comprehensive, public institution with over 15,000 students. UAA offers associate, baccalaureate, and graduate degrees through its main campus in Anchorage, three community campuses, and various extension sites. The School of Education is housed on the main UAA campus within the College of Arts and Sciences in Anchorage serving over 1,500 undergraduate and graduate majors.

Duties: 

The Director is the chief academic and administrative officer for the School of Education and is responsible for the following:

Working with faculty, staff, students, and community partners to promote excellence in teaching, research, and service with a focus on Alaska’s unique needs and opportunities. Managing the school's budgets and fiscal planning and responsible for external fundraising. Leading statewide curriculum development, implementation, evaluation and enhancement; recruiting, supervising, and evaluating faculty and staff; Serving as an innovative and dynamic advocate for the school and its programs among diverse groups of education, business, government, and community leaders and with the general public; Demonstrating effective interaction with the greater community: local and rural school districts, state and national organizations; Ensuring the effective operation of the School of Education in support of the mission and goals of both the College of Arts and Sciences and UAA and functions as an innovative, dynamic advocate for the school in initiating and facilitating education reform; Day-to-day operation of the school and for coordination with other campuses; and Promotion of research initiatives of the school including new research programs and associated equipment and facilities.

  • Commitment to work with families, public schools, community and state agencies/programs in local and rural areas.
  • Effective collaboration and advocacy with public officials on policy issues.
  • Commitment to diversity and support of people, the generation of ideas, and the development of programs.
  • Leadership, integrity, and strong communication and collaborative leadership skills, including conflict resolution.
  • Ability to create a vision for the future of the school within the context of the university and the needs of the state and to help make that vision a reality.
  • Commitment to professional development of faculty and staff.

Required Experience:

  • Earned doctorate appropriate to the School of Education.
  • Serving highly diverse populations of students in P-12 settings.
  • Administrative leadership in program planning and collegial leadership of professionals.

Preferred Experiences:

  • Serving Indigenous populations of students.
  • Budget management.
  • Accreditation in higher education.
  • Distance education and regional or statewide delivery of programs.
  • Writing or administrating grants or other external funding.
  • Administration or teaching in small, rural P-12 schools.

Typical Education or Training:

Earned doctorate appropriate to the School of Education and credentials suitable for a senior faculty appointment in the School of Education, with a successful record of accomplishment in leadership, teaching, research, and service.
