Assistant University Counsel

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a staff attorney position. This position requires a law degree from an accredited school and North Carolina bar membership or the ability to become a member within one year of employment. The successful candidate must have at least two years of relevant legal experience. The Assistant University Counsel will engage in an intellectually challenging, fast-paced practice with special emphasis on human resources, student affairs, and litigation matters. The Assistant University Counsel's primary responsibilities will include client counseling on a wide range of issues; internal investigations; grievance proceedings; matters before the EEOC, DOL, OCR, and other regulatory agencies; pre-litigation strategy and support; subpoena responses; and policy development and implementation. The Assistant University Counsel also will collaborate with the North Carolina Attorney General's Office on employment, student, and other litigation matters before State and federal courts and various administrative agencies, including the Office of Administrative Hearings.

The successful candidate will have strong analytic abilities, adaptability, strategic common sense, and good judgment. Experience working with anti-discrimination laws, with specific emphasis on Title VII, Title IX, and ADA. Experience providing clients with practical, common sense advice on complex matters. Experience representing clients before State and federal courts and agencies. Experience responding to subpoenas and managing discovery in all forms. Experience providing advice on employee benefits plans and programs a plus. Experience working with colleges and universities a strong plus. Initiative, intellectual curiosity, love of learning, creativity, tenacity, confidence and humility, a sense of ownership and responsibility, a sense of humor, energized by collaboration and team problem-solving and solution-finding. Excellent research, writing, client counseling, client advocacy, and mediation skills; the ability to lead others to take appropriate action. Effective team member yet able to handle projects independently; aptitude for building positive working relationships at all levels. Ability to juggle shifting priorities and multiple projects; excellent follow-through.
