Associate Professor / Assistant Professor

The Department of Music (http://mus.hkbu.edu.hk) has rapidly
emerged as one of the leading institutions in Hong Kong to provide
a rigorous performance curriculum supported by vibrant music-making
activities. The Department currently has 16 full-time and
over 100 part-time / adjunct faculty members. Our artist
teachers share our commitment to helping students reach a high
level of musical and intellectual development. Many of our
graduates have continued their studies in graduate schools
worldwide, including top institutions in the USA and Europe.
The Department of Music now seeks outstanding applicants for
multiple tenure-track faculty positions as Associate / Assistant
Professors in the following areas of expertise:
Ethnomusicology
Preference will be given to those with expertise in one or more of
the following fields:
i. East-Asia
ii. China or Chinese diasporas
iii. Cross-cultural research
Music Education
Preference will be given to those with expertise in one or more of
the following fields:
i. E-learning
ii. Gamification
iii. Pedagogy and practice of creativity
iv. Music engagement for young people and the
ageing population
v. Music in human cognition, social and cultural
development
Performance (Cello or Piano)
Preference will be given to those who, in addition to being
excellent performers, have expertise in one or more of the
following fields:
i. Contemporary music
ii. Historical performance
iii. Inter-disciplinary collaboration
iv. Chamber and collaborative performance
Composition
Preference will be given to those with expertise in one or more of
the following fields:
i. Scoring for screen and media (film,
television and video games)
ii. Inter-disciplinary collaboration
iii. Music technology
The appointees are expected to teach a wide range of courses
effectively, including both core and elective courses in the
department’s undergraduate curriculum, general education courses
and, where appropriate, the taught MA Programme in Music, as well
as other courses assigned by the Head of Department. They are
also expected to be an active member in Department- and
Faculty-level administration, including (but not limited to)
quality assurance, curriculum development, academic advising,
supervision of undergraduate Honours Projects and postgraduate
research, internal / external grant application, and active
participation in student recruitment, juries, and auditions.
Applicants should possess a doctoral degree in music (PhD, DMA, or
equivalent). Candidates with three to four years of
collegiate-level teaching experience are preferred.
Appointees are expected to demonstrate teaching excellence as well
as recognised accomplishments in scholarship and/or creative
activities, and to work across sub-disciplines within the
department and with colleagues elsewhere in the University to
further develop departmental strengths in music research, study,
and performance.
Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract of three
years commencing September 2018 or January 2019.
Re-appointment thereafter is subject to mutual agreement and
availability of funding.
Remuneration package includes retirement/gratuity benefits, annual
leave, medical and dental scheme, housing assistance and relocation
allowance wherever appropriate.
Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and
experience.
