The Associate Vice Chancellor/Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer is primarily responsible for the day-to-day management of all aspects of research administration, technology transfer and innovation at the University of Houston System and the University of Houston flagship campus, and reports directly to the Vice Chancellor/Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer. The incumbent will closely work with division directors including pre-award, post-award, compliance, research data and assessment, information technology, financial services, core facilities, animal care, technology transfer, and innovation, to manage, improve, and implement sound business practices for the Division of Research. The AVC/AVP will participate in strategy development and will lead the strategy implementation effort towards metric-based excellence in all aspects of research and innovation service and leadership.

Candidates for the position of Associate Vice Chancellor/Vice President for Research and technology Transfer must have a minimum of a PhD or equivalent in a discipline that entails extensive familiarity and engagement with externally funded research grants and contracts activity; seven years of  advanced experience in  federally-sponsored research programs, preferably in a highly competitive academic setting; demonstrated knowledge of principles of strategic planning and implementation, financial, budget, and business operations planning and control; excellent, demonstrated leadership skills or potential, negotiation skills and team-building traits; capacity for simultaneously working with a wide range of opportunities and challenges inherent in leading sponsored research activities; demonstrated ability in communicating effectively with academic faculty, committees, government, corporations, and members of the research community at large; demonstrated experience and commitment to diversity; and a proven record of building positive professional relationships and accomplishing defined goals. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of how federal, state and corporate funding sources operate, and experience in a leadership role at an academic, or research industrial enterprise, or a federal agency. A history of research funding as a principal investigator is highly desirable.

Job Description:

  • Assist VC/VP for Research and Technology Transfer in directing all aspects of the operations and processes related to grant and contract administration, research compliance, building and maintaining research infrastructure, and fostering collaborations with public and private entities.
  • Work with directors at the Division of Research to identify major operational and management issues that lead to improvements in service to faculty and staff.
  • Serves as a liaison for the VC/VP by working with colleges and departmental chairs to address their needs.
  • Evaluates and implements effective research business processes and practices; consults with colleagues to update policies and procedures affecting contracts and grants.
  • In collaboration with legal counsel, review, revise, and implement policies related to all aspects of research operations including intellectual property, research compliance, conflict of interest, and other pertinent policies.
  • Assist VC/VP in developing a strategic plan for research; ensures division operations are in alignment with the strategic plan for the Division of Research.
  • Works with the Research and Scholarship Committee to administer internal research grants.
  • Collaborate with other divisions within the University to best meet the strategic objectives of both the Division of Research and the University.
  • Assist VC/VP with preparation of major reports for internal and external constituencies.
