The Assistant University Librarian for Administrative Services provides vision, leadership, and coordination for the University of Chicago Library’s administrative services including the oversight of financial management services, grants and contracts, business services, facilities management, and human resources management including management of the Budget Office, Library Facilities, and Human Resources.

The Assistant University Librarian for Administrative Services is responsible ensuring effective and efficient utilization of the financial, facilities, and human resources of the Library. The position provides leadership and direction for planning the allocation of new resources and reallocation of existing resources, for both long- and near-term facilities planning, and for human resources operations, employee relations, and staff development.

Reporting directly to the University Librarian and serving as a member of the Library’s senior leadership, the Assistant University Librarian for Administrative Services works collaboratively to develop and implement library priorities that align with the mission and vision of the University, and contributes to Library-wide strategic planning, resource management, policies, and assessment.

The position works closely with divisional and departmental managers to facilitate departmental planning for budget, staffing, and physical space needs and supports the collaborative development of policies and procedures.

The position represents the Library on various University committees and ad hoc groups and in local, regional and national arenas and works closely with other University offices and leaders to ensure the Library's administrative functions are in alignment with University policies, operations, initiatives, and strategic directions.

The successful candidate must have an ALA-accredited MLS or an equivalent combination of education and library experience; a minimum of five years of proven leadership in managing units, departments, teams and projects in an academic research library, and seven years or more of advanced financial, administrative, management experience; and/or experience in human resources management; and/or purchasing and contracting.

The Search Committee will evaluate the candidate’s demonstrated organizational and analytical skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, and ability to communicate effectively with others; demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with Library staff and University senior administrators in developing productive partnerships on campus and across institutions; experience with hands-on financial/budget management in higher-education settings; ability to operate at a high level of decision-making, priority-setting, and leadership that includes working with complex situations and establishing cross-departmental and cross-divisional collaboration inside and outside the Libraries; familiarity with a unionized environment; and an advanced degree in management, accounting, or related fields
