Reporting to the Associate Director, Specialty Masters Programs, the Assistant Director, MS Career Coach is responsible for advising, educating, coaching and coordinating career education programming for graduate students and alumni (with a special focus on the international student population) from the Smith School Specialty Masters Programs in order to increase marketability to employers, and prepare business students for transition to the workplace and/or facilitate a career change.

 

The Career Coach also supports marketing and business development efforts of the OCS Employer Development (ED) team through the ongoing participation in corporate relations and networking, to create access to the Smith alumni network and facilitate job opportunities (contract and full-time, internships, experiential learning projects, etc.) and promote the Smith School brand.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree plus 5-10 years of experience combining higher education and professional organizations/ services, working with adult professionals.

The ideal candidate will also have 3-5+ years of experience with management hiring processes, corporate recruiting (international recruiting an asset), career coaching, employment counseling, program management, workshop facilitation, and public presentation, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Experience with international business desirable. Familiarity with higher education environment desired. Connectivity within the business community and labor market highly desired.

Ideal candidate will bring academic perspective from both technical and human resources domains.

The key is that there is some comfort with analytics and/or customer insights such that they are able to coach the students in such a way that they effectively sell their analytics expertise.

Familiarity with the analytics industry That may mean familiarity with:

  • Consulting firms (e.g., Big 4, McKinsey, BCG)
  • Technology companies (e.g. Amazon, Google, Uber)
  • Financial services (e.g., credit card and consumer departments at CapOne, Citibank, Chase)
  • Insurance companies (e.g., GEICO, Liberty Mutual)
  • Brand Management and Customer Insights groups at brands (P&G, Black & Decker, Marriott, Hilton, Campbells, J&J)
  • Marketing Research firms (e.g., Nielsen, Milward Brown, IPSOS)
  • Distribution/Logistics/Supply chain
  • Retail (e.g., analytics and customer insights groups at Walmart, Amazon, Nordstrom)
  • Sports & Entertainment Analytics groups (e.g., sports teams, sports agents, sports marketing)

 

Preferences: Master’s Degree highly preferred. Career or Leadership Coaching Certification highly preferred. Possessing coaching distinctions to include ability to employ appreciative inquiry to facilitate clarity, candidacy preparation, and strategic career development is highly preferred. Corporate human resources experience offering insights into candidate recruiting, interviewing, selection, and offer protocols also highly preferred. Corporate experience performing in analytics, supply chain, or business management functions, highly considered as well.
