Princeton University seeks a highly motivated, well-qualified individual to serve as Assistant Director of the Research Integrity & Assurance (RIA) office, reporting to the RIA Director. This senior level position presents a unique & challenging opportunity to support & advance the University's world-class research enterprise by ensuring a successful compliance program.



Employing strong leadership, strategic, & interpersonal skills, the Assistant Director will oversee the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) & the Institutional Biosafety committee (IBC), which are responsible for administering areas of federal research compliance for animal research & research involving biohazardous agents. Future growth opportunities exist for this role in the area of Conflict of Interest (COI) program oversight. The Assistant Director will create a research compliance program that facilitates research while ensuring compliance with all federal, state, & local rules and regulations by developing & implementing compliance related policies & processes; conducting training programs for staff, researchers & administrators; & conducting regular internal audits & risk analyses. To ensure the success of the University's research compliance program, the incumbent will oversee & navigate important & sensitive interactions with key stakeholders across campus, including senior administrators, faculty, students, & staff.



The successful candidate will bring to the University a strong background in research administration-including broad & deep knowledge of compliance regulations, issues & strategies-& have a track record of proven success implementing the components of a strong research compliance program. S/he will have outstanding interpersonal skills, a collaborative style, & a reputation for successfully working with faculty & departmental staff to implement new policies, procedures & programs.

The Dean for Research supports various functions associated with processes surrounding the research environment including obtaining federal grants, obtaining grant monies from non-governmental organizations, information technology, research integrity and assurance (RIA), and laboratory animal welfare. RIA oversees and implements programs designed to support human research via the Institutional Review Board (IRB), animal research via the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), and Financial Conflict of Interest. This position is key to the oversight and development of programs to support the IACUC and IBC.

The person in this role will interact with regulators from a variety of federal, state, local, or other agencies who may be inspecting our program(s) or following up on allegations of animal welfare and/or noncompliance. The person in this role must have a command of the regulation, including a nuanced understanding of the intent of the laws and regulations, so as to be able to articulate clearly our programs, including how and why we developed them in the manner we did, as well as interact with these individuals to provide any information they request.

Responsibilities

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement fully compliant and researcher-focused IACUC and IBC programs including the development and implementation of sound policies, guidelines, and procedures; training materials; forms and processes designed to facilitate research while reducing investigator burden. Perform or oversee all functions associated with holding compliant IACUC and IBC meetings - 30%
  • Interact with a wide range of faculty, researchers, staff, administrators and students to perform outreach and training on the proper use of animals and biohazardous agents in a research setting - 20%
  • Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of an electronic management system to support animal research and research involving the use of biohazardous agents - 10%
  • Maintain all licenses, registrations, permits, rosters, annual reports, etc. according to requirements established by the University, local, state, federal, or other compliance agency - 10%
  • Participate in all areas associated with review and inspection of our programs by outside regulators or compliance organizations. Develop and provide support to procedures established to perform laboratory inspections, program reviews, and address allegations of animal welfare or noncompliance for the IACUC, IBC. Document all findings and submit reports to regulatory bodies or campus officials - 20%
  • Supervise and manage 3 individuals - 10%


Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience working in a research environment in higher education or a related field
  • Demonstrated strong understanding of research compliance topics and government requirements specific to animal research and work with biohazardous agents including the Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, AVMA Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals, NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules, Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, and other relevant texts, policies, guidelines, and procedures
  • Demonstrated commitment to the research mission, including research involving animals and work with biohazardous agent
  • Demonstrated ability to meet one-on-one with regulators, auditors, inspectors, and site visitors to manage inspections, audits and site visits involving programs of animal research and work with biohazardous agents
  • Ability to work flexible hours outside of normal work schedule
  • Experience in developing and implementing institutional policies, guidelines and procedures
  • Experience and ability to manage staff
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills, including the ability to plan, schedule, and successfully carry out multiple projects at the same time with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative and identify, prioritize, and plan activities necessary to meet department goals
  • High level of competency with electronic systems applications and databases
  • Superior critical thinking, writing, and editing abilities
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to innovate and solve problems
  • Evidence of successful experience in a customer service role
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people at different levels
  • High degree of personal integrity and ethics with uncompromising standards
  • Proven ability to form partnerships with faculty to accomplish compliance objectives
  • Experience developing and conducting training or educational workshops in an academic setting
  • Commitment to professional development and ability to travel to national and regional meetings for training, updates, networking, and making presentations

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced research-related or business
  • PRIM&R Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA®)
  • Knowledge of InfoEd electronic management systems
  • Evidence of having presented at campus and professional meetings
  • Ability to pay close attention to details while detecting patterns and maintaining a vision of the larger picture
  • Experience in on-line course development and website content development
  • Membership in professional organizations
