The Director of Student Media serves as the chief executive officer for the Indiana Daily Student (IDS) and its digital formats, the Arbutus yearbook, and their related and supplemental media. (The IDS and Arbutus are student media whose independence is guaranteed by a Charter adopted by the university’s Board of Trustees in 1969.)

The position directs the overall editorial and financial operations of these enterprises, which also serve as university educational laboratories. This position is the chief editorial adviser to both the IDS and Arbutus and requires a thorough understanding and commitment to journalistic principles, standards and ethics. The director also must possess media-related editorial, business and financial acumen to succeed in the digital age.

 

Because of rapidly evolving media convergence, the director will work collaboratively with other media entities at the university and lead with a vision that keeps student media at the forefront of innovation.

The position serves and provides leadership to a variety of committees, service organizations and related professional organizations to keep the organization both visible and state-of-the-art. This position regularly accompanies student leaders and other employees to such conferences. The current position’s occupant also teaches in the Media School and fulfills committee responsibilities in the School.

NOTE: This position reports directly to the dean of the Media School.

 

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree and a national reputation in the fields of student media, journalism education and/or professional media and five years related experience.

Strong candidates will have a record of success and innovation in media editorial and business management, especially digital media and audience development.

Preferred Qualifications: A master’s degree in journalism or a closely related media field; Candidates should demonstrate a record of progressively higher levels of management, leadership and advising experiences; Experience in student media administrative and advising.

Position Salary Range: 69284.8 - 143977.6
