The Opportunity

Georgia is listed among the top ten states for information technology jobs. With Augusta being home to the National Security Agency Georgia (NSAG), the Cyber Center of Excellence at Fort Gordon, and future home of United States Army Cyber Command, the area is poised for explosive growth. Projected workforce needs far exceed current capacity, especially in cybersecurity, information technology, and computer science.

In June 2015, Augusta University announced a major commitment to addressing the needs in this field and launched its Cyber Institute. Since its inception, the Cyber Institute has worked with colleges across the university to establish undergraduate and graduate programs in Cybersecurity, Information Security Management, Intelligence and Security Studies, and Healthcare Information Security. In addition to these new academic programs, the Cyber Institute has helped generate over $1M in funded research and Augusta University’s designation as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) in 2016.

State and federal elected officials have encouraged Augusta University to continue to advance quickly and expand our existing education and research missions in the areas of computer science, information technology, and cybersecurity. In January of 2017, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal announced $60M in funding to establish the Hull-McKnight Georgia Cyber Innovation and Training Center in Augusta. Opening in July of 2018, this state-owned, state-of-the-art facility is designed to bring public education, private industry, and government together to improve workforce training opportunities and spur innovation.

To better align its existing academic resources and to leverage this new facility and the collaborative opportunities it offers, Augusta University has established the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences (SCCS). The school brings together all of Augusta University’s existing Computer Science, Information Technology, and Cybersecurity programs, unifying the mission and vision of these programs.

In June of 2017, AU signed a memorandum of agreement with Savannah River National Laboratory to establish a joint faculty position in cybersecurity.  AU and SRNL desire to strengthen their relationship and individual capabilities through the use of this collaborative faculty position.

Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is one of the U.S. Department of Energy’s 17 national laboratories and is a world leader in science and technology. SRNL offers a unique combination of capabilities, infrastructure, and expertise that are not available anywhere else in the United States. As the designated laboratory for Environmental Management, SRNL has been called upon to provide intellectual leadership and innovative solutions to address complex challenges in environmental stewardship, national security and secure energy manufacturing.

Areas of Interest

Augusta University’s IT program seeks to convey a broad base set of technical knowledge and skills to its students, including networking, software development, data analytics, systems integration, management, operations, and cybersecurity. Through concentrations, students can optionally hone a skillset or gain a broader understanding of environments in which IT is applied.

For this position, Augusta University and Savannah River National Laboratory are seeking individuals who have interests and expertise across a wide range of cybersecurity-related disciplines but are especially interested in the areas of:

• Theory of security and privacy, models of trust and authentication, risk assessment, methods of secure communication and computation, threat modeling and analysis, and fundamentals of anonymity
• Secure operating systems, databases, networks, secure distributed systems, secure cloud systems, secure manufacturing systems and platforms-ICS, DCS, SCADA, secure components and systems in healthcare, autonomous systems and platforms, electronics, and other hardware for system security
• Data and computation privacy, anonymization techniques for users and their data, and private information retrieval
• Cyber-physical systems, computer forensics, malware analysis, vulnerability analysis, and firmware analysis and vulnerability

Position Requirements

Applicants should have a desire for a balanced academic focus. The successful candidate should expect a teaching load of five or six course sections per year. Rigorous academic research, the production of peer-reviewed articles and presentations, and the creation of state-of-the-art technical artifacts are also highly-valued, and thus between 30% and 40% of the individual’s efforts will be dedicated to research and professional development. Tenure status and academic rank are negotiable upon offer, commensurate with qualifications.

Minimum Requirements

• Hold, or receive before the start of employment, a terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D.) in computer science, information technology, information systems, or closely related field.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain a stream of quality, peer-reviewed intellectual contributions in a relevant discipline.
• Demonstrated capability or strong potential for teaching excellence in information technology.
• Ability and motivation to develop, manage, and deliver the curriculum for information technology courses. Interest and experience in online and hybrid-online delivery is a plus.
• U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Q level DOE security clearance. Applicants must identify whether or not they currently hold a clearance or have held a clearance previously.

Augusta University

SRNL is the national laboratory for the DOE Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM). This mission spans the DOE complex and includes 16 sites that remain the focus of ongoing cleanup efforts. SRNL has an important and strategic role in achieving DOE-EM’s objectives at SRS and at other cleanup sites.

Tritium is a critical component of the country’s defense systems and must be continually replenished in order to meet the needs of the nation’s nuclear deterrent. SRNL is the recognized center of excellence for tritium processing, storage, and gas transfer systems necessary as part of the United States’ nuclear arsenal.

SRNL successfully helps the DOE and NNSA meet critical mission needs by providing highly-reliable, cost-effective, and innovative solutions to the most difficult technical challenges. Once a solution is tested and verified at SRNL, it works with production facilities to ensure that the innovative solutions are successfully implemented to benefit the mission. One of the largest cities in Georgia, Augusta is located on the bank of the Savannah River midway between the Great Smokey Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean.
