The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of
Michigan invites applications for the position of Lecturer I
beginning September 1, 2018. Responsibilities include delivering
three East Asian Studies courses to undergraduates each semester.
Appointment level will be 100%. This is not a tenure-track
appointment. Due to the replacement nature of this appointment, the
funding for this position will only be available in Fall 2018 and
Winter 2019. Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field of
Asian Studies. Native or near-native proficiency in English is
required; at least two years of experience teaching at the
college/university level is preferred. Preference will be given to
candidates who have experience successfully teaching survey courses
on China as well as seminars on topics that can span East Asia. The
successful applicant should be prepared to teach two first-year
seminars on different topics, an introduction to Chinese culture
and history, an introductory class in Japanese studies, and a
smaller lecture course on contemporary Chinese society (Chinese
Controversies). The successful candidate should also be able to
teach seminars on Japan and Korea. Interested applicants must apply
