Residential Learning Coordinator / Student Life Coordinator Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Virginia Tech Housing & Residence Life and its University partners are committed to students actively engaging in their learning environments. The Residential Learning Coordinator (RLC)/Student Life Coordinator (SLC) is a critical partner in the implementation of the student life curriculum model. The primary charge for RLCs/SLCs is the execution of learning outcomes centered on the Virginia Tech Student Affairs Aspirations for Student Learning. As such, all Coordinators must be dedicated to creating a community that commits to unwavering curiosity, pursues self-understanding and integrity, practices civility, prepares others for a life of courageous leadership, and embraces the University’s motto “Ut Prosim” as a way of life. Coordinators must also be committed to self-development as well as the development of others; to the mission and identity of the community; and the staff team with which they work. We are looking for individuals who can work in a highly collaborative environment to positively impact student lives outside of the traditional classroom.

PRIMARY PURPOSE Coordinators are responsible for coordinating all building and community aspects of residential life; creating and nurturing a student community oriented towards the academic and social development of residents; working with learning partners to implement and facilitate a student life curriculum that focuses on individual student connections, learning, supportive mentoring, and engaging difference in thoughtful ways; supervising paraprofessional staff that are hired, trained, supervised, and evaluated by the Coordinator; and performing administrative duties congruent with maintaining community standards, occupancy management, and a safe and secure environment.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES Student Learning and Engagement • Create and facilitate an inclusive community development plan that supports individual and community growth and augments goals affiliated with living-learning communities. • Advise and consult with residents regarding social, educational, and academic concerns and initiate appropriate referrals and interventions. • Support student staff in developing strong community connections through interpersonal relationships. • Confront and discuss behavioral issues impacting individual rights, community standards, and any circumstances that compromise the principles of community. • Support the office of Student Conduct through adjudication of policy and community standard violations. • Advise and support, in partnership with Faculty Principal and/or Program Director, student hall leadership responsible for hall governance and community development initiatives; create avenues for leadership development though hall governance or referral to campus resources.

Learning Partnerships (Residential Learning Coordinator) • Maintain a strong working relationship with living-learning community partners, if applicable. Collaborate with Academic Initiatives partners to develop and implement learning initiatives related to the student life curriculum. • Support and partner with Housing & Residence Life Community Resource Officers on student education and crisis response. • Instruct academic course(s) affiliated with department and living learning communities as needed.

Learning Partnerships (Student Life Coordinator) • Maintain continuous contact and a strong working relationship with Faculty Principal. • Collaborate with the Faculty Principal charged with providing direction to the learning community to ensure their efforts to enhance the intellectual climate of the community are successful. • Provide significant support for community vision and student development efforts initiated by Faculty Principal. • Assist in supporting community development initiatives in partnership with Faculty Principal. • Support and partner with Housing & Residence Life Community Resource Officers on student education and crisis response. • Instruct academic course(s) affiliated with department and living learning communities as needed.

Administration • Recruit, select, train, and supervise staff of undergraduate and/or graduate student leaders. • Provide staff direction and development through weekly staff meetings, individual meetings, and development activities. • Conduct performance evaluations to determine development and performance needs, create action plans to address individual needs and in-service programs for group needs. • Coordinate staff in efforts to assure a safe and secure environment, including fire and emergency evacuation, and health and safety inspections. • Support occupancy management efforts by coordinating opening, academic year, and closing inspection of rooms/facilities and reconciliation of student occupancy records. • Create documentation and reports reflecting supervision, engagement, and administration efforts and responsibilities as requested. • Support Conference and Guest Services summer conference program; assist with administration and facilitation of conference services within respective area of responsibility. • Support campus partners with academic year and summer initiatives including parent/student orientation, Hokie Camp, university trainings.

Departmental Contribution • Provide service and leadership responsibilities for one or more departmental committees. • Participate in evening and weekend on-call/call-back duty for residential campus. • Assist with special projects as assigned by Student Affairs and Housing & Residence Life. • Maintain office hours and respond to student, parent, and stakeholder needs through visibility and availability. • Model active engagement with students and staff as a live-in professional mentor.

Job Requirements

 

Required Qualifications:

-Master’s degree in college student affairs or related field conferred by time of appointment to position. -The successful candidate should also demonstrate the ability to work with a diverse student body and foster sensitivity to diversity issues in the University community.

Preferred Qualifications: 

-Some full-time work experience in residence life or operations; -Staff supervision experience; -Knowledge of or experience with structured first-year programs or other special interest programs; -Experience with training and teaching.
