The Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is accepting applications from scholars and practitioners of Theater and Performance Studies for a four-year, non-renewable, postdoctoral teaching appointment as a Harper and Schmidt Fellow who holds the rank of Collegiate Assistant Professor. The Fellow is a member of the College Faculty whose primary responsibility will be to teach theater and performance studies classes in the College's general education (Core) program. An ability to incorporate theater and performance practice into course work is desirable.

The position is open to those who will have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. or DFA degree no later than August 31, 2018. Applicants who have completed an MFA and can demonstrate relevant professional experience in addition to their academic training are also welcome to apply.

 In most years, the Fellow will teach two sections per quarter of Core courses in TAPS, making a total of six per year. Currently, TAPS core courses includeText & Performance (TAPS 103), Acting Fundamentals (TAPS 102) and Drama: Embodiment & Transformation (TAPS 101).  The Fellow also has the opportunity to design an independent course, to be taught usually in the fourth year.

 The Fellow will be a member of the Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts (https://societyoffellows.uchicago.edu/). They will be eligible for one quarter of research leave, typically in the third year of residence, and may be eligible to apply for a second research leave in the Spring of the fourth and final year of appointment. The annual salary for 2018-19 will be $69,500 plus health benefits and an annual professional development allowance of $5,000. Other benefits, based on eligibility, include a publication allowance and a childcare allowance. The effective date for this appointment is September 1, 2018.  This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with SEIU, Local 73.
