Assistant Dean for Student Support and Success

Fordham College at Rose Hill

Fordham University

Fordham University has an excellent reputation as a dynamic institution in the cultural heart of New York City.  Founded in 1841, Fordham enrolls more than 15,100 undergraduate and graduate students in its 10 Colleges and Schools.

Fordham University’s Fordham College at Rose Hill seeks an Assistant Dean for Student Support and Success to provide leadership in the establishment and coordination of student success and retention initiatives and programs in the Office of the Dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill (FCRH). Working in close collaboration with Dean’s Office staff, Arts and Science faculty, and other constituencies across the university, the Assistant Dean develops and implements programs to provide academic support for students in the College and identifies strategic opportunities to improve student retention, persistence, and graduation rates. The Assistant Dean takes an approach that balances appropriate use of data analytics with an understanding of FCRH’s Ignatian person-centered approach.

The Assistant Dean will provide leadership for and coordination of FCRH efforts to improve student retention, academic progress and success, and graduation rates, as well as provide leadership for the integration of the Student Success Collaborative (SSC) into the work of the dean’s office and faculty advising, as well as support and assessment. S/he will oversee dean’s office staff who provide academic counseling for at-risk students, develop and offer academic success workshops for FCRH students, such as workshops on test-taking, time management, and study skills; and, as appropriate, advise academically at-risk students. S/he will also be responsible for establishing close partnerships with other offices on campus, including the academic departments, Dean of Students and Residence Life, Campus Ministry, Career Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, and the Office of Disability Services, to provide appropriate referrals and coordinate College responses regarding students who need additional support.

Other duties of the Assistant Dean include: taking a data-driven approach to identifying different groups of students, analyzing indicators, and developing plans, in collaboration with the faculty, dean’s office staff, and other offices on campus for student support and success; remaining current on best practices, current scholarship, emerging trends, and successful initiatives and sharing that knowledge within the dean’s office and with other interested constituencies; developing communication strategies that highlight student success programming; and maintaining and disseminating centralized lists of campus-based tutoring resources and availability.

The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in higher education administration, advising, or related field with three to five years experience in a higher education setting working directly on issues of advising, retention, and student success. Leadership experience preferred. The candidate should have excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills and proven ability to juggle multiple responsibilities, to organize and prioritize, and to work collaboratively. Experience with data-driven approaches, including retention/advising software (such as EAB’s SSC) desired. Proficiency in

Microsoft Office Suite, especially Microsoft Excel, and Google apps needed, as well as proficiency in or willingness to learn Banner applications and JADU (web content management system). Must have knowledge of national trends and literature regarding current issues and best practices in student success and retention and progression, especially in the context of a private, residential college. S/he should have a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.
