Job Overview: 

The Associate Comptroller is responsible for the development and implementation of University accounting policies and related procedures.  The position seeks to insure appropriate internal control mechanisms.  The position ensures that the Banner Finance system and its associated modules and feeder systems are properly functioning and looks for ways to continuously utilize the system to maximize efficiencies for the department and the university community.  The Associate Comptroller is responsible for ensuring the timely closing on a monthly and fiscal year basis of the university and its subsidiaries.  The Associate Comptroller assures accuracy of all financial transactions and insures compliance with the accounting policies of Drexel University.  The incumbent provides general management, training and direction to the General Accounting office.  Elements of oversight for General Accounting include the coordination of responses to annual audit requests, training and promulgation of information related to the fiscal year end close to the department and community, review and oversight of all bank and account reconciliations, review and approval of journal entries, development of footnote and other specialized work papers.  The Associate Comptroller utilizes reporting tools (Hyperion and/or OBIEE) to generate the data that supports the financial transactions.  The Associate Comptroller closely liaises with the Associate Comptroller of Financial Reporting to ensure continuous communication and consistency of accounting across entities.

Qualifications: 

Bachelor's degree in accounting with a minimum of 5 years of Management experience in higher education.
Experience using the Ellucian Banner ERP system preferred.
CPA preferred.  
Excellent managerial, analytical, technical and financial reporting abilities are required.  
Strong communication skills are needed to interact successfully with faculty, staff and students.

 

Essential Functions: 

The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:

Management responsibility for General Accounting department which is a component of the University's Office of the Comptroller.  The Associate Comptroller is responsible for the oversight and management of accounting operations using the Banner ERP system.  

The position seeks to ensure the proper usage of the chart of accounts in according with accounting principles.

Provides supervisory oversight to the two Managers of General Accounting who each supervises a staff of four-five employees.

Works closely with the Associate Comptroller responsible for Financial Reporting to ensure that operational issues are addressed that impact the financial statements.  

Responsible for ensuring that transactions for university and all its subsidiaries are processed timely and accurately and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.  

The Associate Comptroller will respond and coordinate responses to annual audits requests and supporting documentation.   Provides community with training and regular communications related to the fiscal year end closing process.

Acts as a liaison with the financial management at the subsidiary entities, Budget and Planning Offices, and business managers of the schools and colleges to ensure that accounting transactions are properly reported.  

Ensures that subsidiary ledgers are in balance and that the interfaces are properly feeding to general and operating ledgers.

Reviews monthly bank and account reconciliations and resolves issues with appropriate areas of the university.

Assists with development of white papers related to complex transactions.

Drives efficiency of financial reporting process in combination with Financial Reporting and IT.

Develops and manages external relationships with internal and external contacts at varied levels.  

Solves highly complex issues with cross-functional or budget unit impact. Decisions are made through interpretation of policies and procedures; has oversight of all decisions made in functional area.

Supervisory responsibilities include directing teaching, training and use of competency, productivity and performance standards, selection of candidates, making termination recommendations, performance management, and reviewing performance for staff in department.  

Provides information on budgets and expenditures to departmental administrators and assists them in making informed financial decisions.

Recommends and implements policies and procedures to improve customer service, insure internal controls and streamline operations.

Keeps up to date with and insures the operation of university-wide best practices and internal controls.

Strong knowledge of GAAP

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

                     Attention to detail

Experience using Hyperion, OBIEE and Banner 

                     ERP   

Advanced knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access

Knowledge of SQL and Oracle databases

Ability to manage strict deadlines and multiple

                      priorities     

Equipment Used: Personal computer and related equipment and software (databases, spreadsheets, word processing applications, dual monitors, keyboard, etc.); standard office equipment, including but not limited to: telephone, printer; copier; FAX; scanner; typewriter; desk; files; storage cabinets; calculator.

Environmental Conditions: Regular Business office setting; overhead and indirect lighting.  Occasion travel to other campuses of locations is required; fluctuating internal climate control (levels of heating, cooling and general air handling may vary); frequent emails and workflow interruptions; numerous incoming calls.

Physical Requirements Position requires sitting for extended periods; occasion movement between campuses; prolonged exposure to computer monitors; frequent direct interaction with students, faculty, administrators, staff, etc., demanding intensive concentration and excellent listening skills; must prioritize well and focus on completion of tasks and objectives while under stress of demanding work schedule; must operate various input/output devices including keyboard and computer "mouse"; maintains a positive and objective approach and attitude.
