Harvey Mudd College, a highly selective undergraduate college of science and engineering and a member of The Claremont Colleges, announces the search for the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students. The Vice President/Dean provides vision, direction and strategic leadership to facilitate the growth, personal and academic achievement, and career success for Harvey Mudd College students through comprehensive student life programs and services that complement, support and enhance the mission of the College. The VP/Dean leads the Division of Student Affairs and oversees coordination of programs, facilities, resources and support aligned with Harvey Mudd College’s academic mission to enhance student learning and growth. The VP/Dean oversees the following offices within the Division of Student Affairs: Career Services, Community Engagement, Health and Wellness, and Diversity. In collaboration with the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs (AVPSA), the VP/Dean also oversees the activities and staff of the offices of Campus Life and Residential Life.

Reporting to President Maria Klawe, Ph.D., the VP/Dean is a member of the President’s Cabinet and provides support to the Trustee Student Affairs Committee. The VP/Dean serves as a voting member of the faculty. The Division of Student Affairs is an integral part of the campus community: the VP/Dean works collaboratively with all areas of the College and interacts regularly with student affairs colleagues at the other Claremont Colleges. The Harvey Mudd Honor Code is a particular point of pride at the College: students value self-governance and the spirit of collaboration and high achievement that is deeply woven into the culture.

Harvey Mudd College is known for being a leader and innovator in science, technology, mathematics and engineering education. Almost all of the College’s 844 undergraduate students live on the campus (male/female ratio: 52/48%) and enjoy close and supportive relationships with the faculty, staff and each other. Students greatly value their voice in decision making: the VP/Dean will have experience with and enjoy a highly visible role in an environment of close interaction with students and colleagues.

A master’s degree is required; a doctoral degree is preferred. The VP Dean will have significant experience in a leadership role in student affairs with proven ability to supervise, mentor, motivate and develop a talented and committed staff. The VP/Dean will support the further development of an inclusive environment that fosters teamwork and is committed to delivering the highest level of programs and services to students. The appointment is available July 1, 2018.
