Located in Central North Carolina, Elon University is a selective, independent, residential university of 6,700 students that is renowned as a national model for engaged learning, along with excellence in the liberal arts and sciences and professional programs. In the 2018 “America's Best Colleges” guide, U.S. News & World Report rated Elon #1 among Southern master’s-level universities, #1 for its commitment to undergraduate teaching and #1 for innovation, while also recognizing Elon, more than any other university in the nation, for its “Focus on Success,” citing the University’s excellence in all eight categories: study abroad, internships, service learning, undergraduate research, learning communities, first-year experience, senior capstone, and writing across the disciplines. The Experiential Learning Requirement (ELR) and Elon Experiences Transcript have become national models for linking student learning inside and outside the classroom; both are innovations made possible by the strong partnerships between academic affairs and student life at the university.

Elon University seeks to continue the transformation of the sorority and fraternity experience on campus as it becomes more closely aligned with values such as scholarship, leadership, service, and community. University-wide initiatives are fostering the development of a sorority and fraternity community that reflects the level of excellence, innovation, and engaged learning for which the university is known. Nominations and applications are currently invited for a visionary, experienced thought leader to facilitate this transformation.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Campus Life, the Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life leads the department, develops and implements short-term and long-range plans for fraternity and sorority life, sets department goals and priorities, coordinates assessment and evaluation efforts, and enacts strategies to achieve priorities of the department, division, and university. This individual is a key partner with faculty and administrative leaders across the institution in supporting university initiatives designed to enhance engaged learning experiences, strengthen social climate and out-of-class engagement, and transform the residential campus experience to integrate the residential, academic, and social aspects of campus life.

Responsibilities of the director include hiring and developing a high performing and cohesive staff, crafting and implementing student-centered programs, and providing oversight for leadership development, chapter and council advising, policy development, advisor support, budget management, and overall administration of the sorority and fraternity community. The director communicates the mission and vision of the department to the fraternity/sorority and university communities, international organizations, and the higher education profession.

This position is responsible for the overall supervision of professional staff and office personnel, providing direct supervision, guidance, and support to two (2) assistant directors and one (1) program assistant, indirect supervision of 19 student staff, and mentoring and advising support to a community with 24 chapters and more than 2,500 members.

The traditional candidate for this role would be an individual with a completed master’s degree in higher education, student personnel, or related field and at least 5-7 years of progressive post-masters experience in fraternity and sorority life, student involvement, or a related functional area in higher education. Elon University invites candidates with non-traditional backgrounds in business, leadership and organizational development, or other fields. The ability to translate experiences from those fields into a higher education context is essential. Other important skills and experience for success include the following:

  • experience implementing leadership development and mentoring initiatives, especially with young adult populations;
  • ability to take initiative and plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in complex situations where competing priorities exist;
  • transformational leadership skills and the ability to support student leadership and ownership in creating positive change;
  • demonstrated experience building partnerships and relating effectively with a diverse range of constituents and stakeholders;
  • demonstrated knowledge and experience working with Greek-letter organizations and ability to support the evolution of a positive, successful, values-based culture of excellence; and
  • demonstrated success in designing, implementing, and evaluating educational programming for values-based organizations, such as sororities and fraternities.

Review of applications will begin immediately, and continue until the position is filled; position review date is Thursday, February 22, 2018. A resume with an accompanying cover letter may be submitted via the Spelman Johnson website at www.spelmanandjohnson.com/open-positions. Nominations for this position may be emailed to J.
