The UTRGV School of Medicine, established in 2015 and located in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, has a focus toward community health. UTRGV School of Medicine is committed to the tri-partite missions of research, education and clinical care. The Associate Dean for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion will formulate and implement plans and polices to foster an environment and culture that supports and encourages diversity and inclusion at all levels: students, faculty and staff.

The Associate Dean for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion will collaborate with senior leadership, department chairs, faculty, students, staff, and other constituent groups internal and external to the School of Medicine to achieve this goal.

Incumbent will:

  • Serve as a champion for changes that enhance awareness and achievement of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Maintain a contemporary vision and set of goals for diversity and provide guidance to school stakeholders consistent with those goals for equity and inclusion.
  • Promote organizational and interdisciplinary collaboration among programs that will enhance diversity awareness and education.
  • Serve as an advocate and resource for all populations at the School of Medicine including women, members of ethnic/racial groups and members of and LGBTQ community.
  • Assess climate concerns regarding diversity and inclusion among the faculty, medical student and resident populations, and staff.
  • Provide leadership for School of Medicine initiatives designed to recruit, retain, support, and ensure the success and advancement of underrepresented student, faculty and staff populations (working in conjunction with the School of Medicine Dean’s Advisory Committee, School of Medicine Diversity Committee, School of Medicine Student Government, etc.).
  • Coordinate the gathering and reporting of statistical data on underrepresented student, faculty and staff populations in the areas of enrollment, retention, and graduation.
  • Facilitate access to counseling, mediation, and conflict resolution regarding diversity and inclusion related issues for students, residents, faculty, and staff.
  • Promote professional, academic, and social development regarding cultural competence for students, residents, faculty, and staff.
  • Study, recommend and assist with implementation or revision of School of Medicine policies and curriculum in order to raise awareness of multiculturalism and enhance diversity and cultural competence within the School of Medicine and UTRGV.
  • Assist education leaders within the school to meet diversity-related components of medical school accreditation guidelines.
  • Serve on the School of Medicine Admissions Committee to assist in recruitment and enrollment of underrepresented student populations in all disciplines.
  • Work with diversity leaders and groups beyond the School of Medicine campus-wide, statewide, and nationally (e.g. Group on Diversity and Inclusion [GDI] of the AAMC).
  • Participate in educational activities as assigned.

MD, Ph.D. or equivalent degree with 3 or more years’ experience in a well-established diversity program that includes active expansion of diversity planning. Academic rank and compensation package will be awarded commensurate with qualifications and experience.
