Responsibilities:

The Office of the General Counsel at Northeastern University seeks a full-time attorney to provide support for the University and its various colleges and departments in the areas of employment law, labor law, and litigation. The successful candidate will handle a variety of employment matters, including legal research and oral and written advice on a broad range of issues such as hiring, promotion, evaluation, and discipline, including terminations, non-renewals, reorganizations, reductions in force, leaves of absence and reasonable accommodations, wage and hour considerations, harassment and discrimination investigations and outcomes, and review of personnel and other university policies. Responsibility for labor matters will include, but not be limited to, assistance with collective bargaining, administration of collective bargaining agreements, assisting with and/or handling grievance hearings and arbitrations, research and assistance with labor litigation, managing union information requests, research and assistance with international labor issues and handling other labor-related matters.

The successful candidate will perform activities related to litigation in a wide range of subject areas in both Federal and State court and before administrative agencies such as the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, National Labor Relations Board, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. The responsibilities will encompass all aspects of litigation, including drafting and responding to pleadings, motions, and discovery, representing the University in court and at administrative agencies, as well as overseeing outside counsel.

The Assistant General Counsel will work closely with and accept direction from the University's labor, employment and litigation counsel, as well as other senior attorneys in the Office of General Counsel.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a positive, strong and proactive work ethic, and the ability to prioritize a heavy, complex, and varied workload. This position requires a demonstrated capability for legal research, writing, analysis and reasoning; an ability to develop and maintain successful, collaborative professional relationships; impeccable oral and written communication skills; an ability to identify and resolve complicated and sensitive problems creatively and with professional discretion; and an ability to function successfully in a deadline driven, fast-paced academic and research environment. The successful candidate is expected to use independent judgment where appropriate while keeping senior attorneys appropriately informed and involved.

Qualifications:

Six - eight years’ experience in employment law, labor law, and litigation in a law firm and/or in-house; a degree from a recognized college or university; graduation from an accredited law school with a J.D.; admitted to practice law in Massachusetts and a member in good standing; preferred experience with higher education areas of the law.
