Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Office of Resource Development is currently seeking a Leadership Giving Officer for Parents Leadership Giving. The Leadership Giving Officer identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards prospective donors, who are capable of making gifts of $100,000 to $5M, and in some cases, beyond $5M. This position builds successful fundraising strategies and manages a portfolio focused on non-alumni current parent prospects in a few selected major markets by creating individualized solicitation plans leading to major gifts in support of MIT's fundraising priorities. The Leadership Giving Officer will collaborate with Resource Development and MIT Alumni Association staff, school-based fundraisers, senior MIT leadership, faculty, alumni, volunteers, donors, and members of the Corporation Development Committee or other volunteers of the Institute.

Characteristic Duties:

In the process of conducting business, staff members are expected to perform with professionalism, collegiality and integrity in order to create an atmosphere of cooperation and collaboration that will ensure the success of the entire office team and its fundraising goals.

Portfolio Management (80%)

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors and prospects with the capacity to make a financial commitment of $100,000 or more to MIT.
  • Maintain a portfolio of mostly non-alumni, current parent prospects. There could be some MIT alumni prospects at the discretion of the Leadership Giving Officer's manager.
  • With guidance from senior officers, create individualized solicitation plans leading to major gifts in support of MIT's fundraising priorities by becoming familiar with and articulate about the Institute including its mission, culture, academic programs and fundraising objectives. It is expected that 80% of a Leadership Giving Officer's time is focused on meeting with prospects and donors, either on the road or at MIT.
  • Identify top portfolio prospects and determine fundraising objectives for both annual and major solicitations.
  • Arrange for prospects to visit campus where possible and meet with appropriate MIT staff and faculty.
  • Develop communication links with various gift staffs (Alumni Fund, Principal Gifts, School Development Officers) to ensure a coordinated approach to prospects.
  • Partner with OIG senior staff to counsel Institute officers, including Senior Administrative and Academic staff, on cultivation and solicitation strategies to be followed for selected prospective donors.
  • Provide timely and constructive contact reports to all interested parties and deliver timely and effective follow-up to prospects and donors.
  • Develop fiscal year plans and methods to meet strategic goals.
  • Work collaboratively with the Office of Donor Relations and other offices to maintain a strong stewardship strategy for portfolio donors.
  • Arrange meetings, appointments and other contacts for MIT officers.
Program and Volunteer Management (20%)
  • Work closely with colleagues in MIT's Parents Association and Annual Fund to ensure processes and activities are aligned to best leverage the overlapping goals of all departments who work with undergraduate student families.
  • Manage the Parents Leadership Circle (PLC) Program. Increase awareness of and clearly communicate the benefits of the PLC to prospective MIT parents.
  • Engage prospects in family focused events across the Institute including Campus Preview and Family weekends as well as regional activities and events.
  • Work closely with a small number of volunteers to aid in the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospects and donors. These volunteers will be primarily from the Corporation Development Committee (CDC), Parent Leadership Circle (PLC) or with the Parent representative of the Alumni Association Annual Fund Board.
  • Identify, recruit, train, support, and deploy volunteers on activities that aid in the cultivation of major gifts.
  • Work with volunteers to arrange specific prospect assignments.  Review local volunteer assignments to ensure prospect strategies are implemented.
  • Work with volunteers on events ranging from dinners, meetings and academic-related events in support of fund-raising objectives.
  • Serve as a resource to volunteers by providing prospect research as required, arranging for proposals, etc.
  • Liaise with MIT Admissions representative in OIG on specific parent relationships
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required.  Minimum 3 years of direct fund-raising experience required.  Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with the benefactors and prospects of the Institute. Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to establish effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, and volunteers; and a proven record of accomplishment in a position requiring independent planning and efficient utilization of time and resources. Seek individuals with well-proven human relations and communications skills, familiarity with business travel and willingness to travel approximately 30% of the time.
