Carthage College seeks nominations and applications for its next Vice President for Marketing and Communications. Reporting directly to the President of the College, this accomplished leader will oversee an award-winning team of creative professionals in the Office of Communications. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of inspiring leadership, creative and strategic thinking, collaboration, and marketing success across media platforms.
Founded in 1847 by Lutheran pioneers in education, the vibrant Carthage College community includes 2,600 full-time and 400 part-time students. The state-of-the-art campus — a beautiful 80-acre arboretum on the shore of Lake Michigan — is located midway between Chicago and Milwaukee in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
The search commences during Dr. John Swallow’s first year as president in an unprecedented time of prosperity and innovation at the College. Carthage’s approach to education combines an environment of reflection and self-discovery with a culture of high expectation for our students, so they can uncover and ignite their true potential. Additionally, the College has celebrated consistent stability in enrollment and consecutive years of balanced budgets. These accomplishments, coupled with an increasing academic profile of incoming students, are signs of a maturing institution that is elevating its prominence in the marketplace through a strong and unwavering vision of academic and co-curricular excellence.
The Vice President for Marketing and Communications provides strategic leadership for the College and the functional units of the Office of Communications. This position serves as an officer of the College and works closely with the other members of the President’s executive staff toward realization of the strategic plan. The VPMC assists the President in increasing the recognition of the institution — through public relations, marketing, and thought leadership locally, regionally, and nationally — and in shaping genuine and meaningful internal communications, while providing leadership in all communications-related activities.
Overseeing the strategy for the College’s marketing and communication efforts, the VPMC carries important institutional responsibilities including developing the Carthage brand, directing communication strategies, managing crisis communications, and leading marketing and advertising initiatives. This oversight also includes the ability to leverage market analytics, manage internal communications, produce multimedia publications, and lead media relations outreach. The successful candidate must have comprehensive knowledge of the creative process, and the skills necessary to effectively lead a team of dedicated professionals. Additionally, the Vice President for Marketing and Communications is the chief public relations officer, College spokesperson, and principal strategist for thought leadership.
The successful candidate will be a seasoned professional with extensive experience leading marketing, communications, brand management, and public relations initiatives. This individual should possess effective written and oral communication skills applicable for a variety of outlets and audiences.
While the search committee is open to considering a variety of pathways to the VPMC position, a bachelor’s degree is required and a master’s degree is preferred. Experience in higher education is highly valued; however, candidates from other areas of marketing and communications with a strong record of leadership, success, and a clear appreciation for the mission and work of a liberal arts college are encouraged to apply.
