Teach High School at one of Beijing's Best Secondary Schools: Hiring In All Subject Areas 

The Affiliated High School of Peking University (HSPU) is hiring secondary school teachers in all subjects (math, science, language arts, humanities, social studies, PE, arts, and college counselling) for the 2018-19 and future academic years. Though we are only looking for 8 new hires minimum at the moment, we can exceed this number and are always looking for exceptional educators to add to our ranks. HSPU is considered one of the premier secondary school programs in China, and is often ranked among the top 10 schools nationwide. HSPU is able to add a small number of highly motivated foreign teachers across all subject areas for teaching and advising on our curriculum reform initiatives.

As an "affiliated" high school, we are a department of Peking University (China's top university), and enjoy a highly academic and motivated student body and faculty, making full use of Peking University's many resources. Language of instruction is in English. Teachers teach 16 45-minute classes a week (12 hours). Class sizes range from 3 to 18 students in a class. Classes below 18 students are taught in seminar "round table" style. In addition, teachers are expected to work with students outside of class in mentoring and/or extra-curricular activities for an additional 8 hours per week, for a total of 20 student contact hours per week.We follow the Chinese public school calendar and holidays. For most contracts the school year runs from September 1 to the last Friday in June.

Additional Salary Information: Additional Salary Information: Salary is in Chinese RMB (240,000-420,000/year). Range in USD is approx $40~70, 000/year. We also provide: 1) a monthly living stipend or free on-campus housing for faculty. 2) A yearly international travel stipend of 15,000 RMB (approx $2500) 3) A one-time relocation fee of 5000 RMB (approx $800) 4) Global Health Insurance 5) Professional Development Stipend of 5000 RMB/year (approx $800) Assistance is given to foreign faculty on how to convert Chinese RMB to foreign currency and then transfer to bank accounts outside of China if needed.

The Affiliated High School of Peking University (HSPU), nestled in the hi-tech Zhongguan Cun area of Beijing, was founded in 1960. It is a national level key and model public secondary school directly under the supervision of Peking University. The 2300 students in Junior 1 through Senior 3 (grades 7-12) primarily come from Beijing, with students admitted from across the country, Korea, Russia, Singapore, Japan, India, the United States, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Class sizes currently do not exceed 30 students per class (the norm in a Chinese public school is 50). Though known for our rigor, we provide a relatively free study environment to give each student the power to make choices and direct their own study and activities. In this way we create a campus that encourages creativity and independence among our students, giving them a platform to allow their true talents to grow. Mission HSPU seeks to nurture students who are "industrious, meticulous, realistic, and innovative". Academics and Student Management As a national key secondary school, HSPU upholds high academic standards. 100% of students who do not go abroad enter national "key" universities. Over the years, students have won 14 medals in International Academic Olympiads, and taken first prize three years in a row at the Beijing Leida Cup Young Science Talents; 30 students have been awarded Beijing’s highest honor for secondary school students, the Golden and Silver Sails; and HSPU students have represented China at the Professor Harry Messel International Science School every year since Chinese delegates began attending. HSPU is able to maintain such high academic results in part through its continued insistence on staying at the forefront of education reform in China. HSPU has fully embraced the national curriculum standards, offering students course and subject choice throughout their secondary years in a credit-based elective system of curriculum management. Students attend classes in specialist classrooms, rather than staying in one room for most of their instruction. The Academy System Recognizing that students with different strengths and goals should be given more choices for their education, HSPU has reorganized its high school division into four academies. Each academy represents a specific curricular model. After choosing their academy, students will then be able to design their next three years of study based on their college goals. Students, however, may still take classes in any of the four academies. Xingzhi Academy: The largest academy, Xingzhi Academy, is for the students who will sit the national exams and attend a Chinese university. Students create a three-year study plan which includes required and elective courses. Unlike many schools, students are given much autonomy in deciding which courses to take and when to take them. Yuanpei Academy: Yuanpei Academy is our Gifted and Talented academy. Students must apply and take another round of exams and have an interview to be admitted. All students at HSPU are exceptional and all courses meet or exceed the rigor of American “honors” courses. However, we also recognize that we have a large group of students whose talents demand even more autonomy in course planning. Most of the students will attend Chinese universities, with some thinking of going abroad. For the students attending Chinese universities, they will be able to enjoy other pathways to being accepted other than the national exams. In this way they are able to plan a full three-years of learning and growth without having to spend much of their senior year on exam preparation. Independent research, access to Peking University resources and courses, much unstructured self-study time, and the addition of epistemology and humanities courses are but a few of the things which make Yuanpei unique. Boya Academy: Boya Academy is a Chinese-based liberal arts high school curriculum for students who want a solid grounding in Chinese culture and lietrature. Students in Boya read classics of philosophy and literature in Chinese originals or Chinese translations. Working closely with our last Academy, the Dalton Academy, Boya strives to give students a liberal arts education influenced by the traditional Chinese academy mode of teaching. Students in Boya make course choices that allow them to spread their study evenly over three years, rather than taking the majority of their courses in their first two years, as is more common in Xingzhi Academy. The extra time they are then given can also be used to participate in more experiential and service learning programs. In addition, Boya students have some non-language courses in English, including psychology, World History and Art History. Dalton Academy: Dalton Academy is our bilingual liberal arts academy. It is modeled on the Dalton Plan, including its central tenants of House, Assignment, and Lab. Except for a very few core courses, all classes are elective and taught in seminar groups of no more than 18 students. 50% of all courses offered are taught in English. Students admitted to Dalton go through a rigorous selection process and are mainly planning on going abroad for university. In addition to more traditional subjects, Dalton includes such courses as general philosophy, epistemology, law, economics, world literature, international relations, and Spanish. We have worked closely with faculty from St. John’s College Santa Fe to create a bilingual comparative humanities course, which is the spine of the three-year curriculum. The approach is similar to the Core Text movement among some universities and colleges in the States. Students explore the questions of What is Knowledge?, What is Change? ,and What is Humanity? over there three years with deep investigations into the philosophy, history, and literature of world cultures, reading texts in both Chinese and English translations. This program is unique in China and one of which we are especially proud. Pastoral Care Students at HSPU, regardless of Academy, are grouped into seven Houses which cross grade level boundaries. The traditional system of students being grouped by grade level into classes with a homeroom teacher has been replaced with older and younger students sharing the same House and each group of 100 students being assigned a full-time career and guidance counselor. Older students serving as Prefects mentor younger students. This is not a boarding program, but our day-to-day student-centered management approach. Student Government, Teams and Activities HSPU students have many opportunities to develop strong leadership skills outside of classes. Each House has its own student leadership in charge of running activities within the House and with other Houses. The HSPU Student Government is active in running a host of programs and overseeing the more than 100 student Teams and organizations. Students all have many chances to participate in athletic teams and arts troupes, representing HSPU around the country and abroad. All students are involved in community service, with senior secondary students alone taking part in more than 20,000 hours of community service a year. Community Service is managed under our Center for Experiential Learning, where students take an active leadership role in organizing meaningful activities for their peers and the community. International Connections Since HSPKUs founding in 1960, we have held a strong global vision, welcoming foreign students into our community. At present we have relationships with schools all over the world, including: The Hotchkiss School and Menlo School (USA), Ressun School (Finland); Debussey School (France); PLC School and Scotch College (Australia); Waseda University's Hongjo Senior High School and School Kumamoto (Japan); Raffles Institution and Nanyang Girl's School (Singapore); St. Paul's School and St. Paul's Convent (Hong Kong); Hsinchu San Min Secondary School (Taiwan) and many others. We are currently working with Duke University's TIPP program to create programs for Chinese students and conduct research into gifted and talented education in China.
