Nature of Work

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Special Education position in the Department of Teaching and Learning of the College of Education (COE). The Department seeks a scholar with content knowledge of general core coursework in Special Education with expertise in multi-tiered systems of academic and behavior support within inclusive classroom settings (response to intervention and schoolwide positive behavior interventions and supports). The typical time allocation for tenured and tenure-track faculty in the COE is 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service. The teaching load for this position is five classes per academic year (reduction to four classes for the first academic year), some of which may be online, hybrid or at off-campus locations, with the potential for additional teaching opportunities during the summer. Additionally, the faculty member will develop and refine teaching and assessment practices; advise students; contribute to the COE's accreditations initiatives; and participate in program, department, college, and community meetings. 

Examples of Work Performed

The faculty member would be responsible for teaching, research, and service/leadership per the COE Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure Guidelines. Primary teaching and advising responsibilities will be in graduate and undergraduate programs in Special Education and the undergraduate program in Inclusive Elementary Education.  In research, the faculty member will be expected to contribute to the research profile of the department through publications and the pursuit of grants and other sponsored program activities. Service and leadership responsibilities will be to the profession and scholarly discipline, and will begin at the Program, Department, and College and over time expand to the University and System.

Minimum Requirements

  • Licensure in special education or equivalent content area, such as inclusive education or behavioral support.
  • Minimum of three years of school-based special education experience with students any ages 5 to 21-years old.
  • Completed doctorate in special education or equivalent field from a regionally accredited institution, by date of employment.
  • Evidence of effective in-person college-level teaching commensurate with the level of appointment (Assistant Professor).
  • Evidence of scholarship commensurate with the level of appointment (Assistant Professor).
  • Evidence of expertise in multi-tiered systems of academic and behavior support within inclusive classroom settings (response to intervention and school-wide positive behavior interventions and supports).

Preferred Requirements

Preference will be given to qualified candidates who have one or more of the following qualifications:

  • Defined scholarly agenda
  • Expertise in rural education
  • Expertise in program evaluation
  • Evidence of potential for securing external funds
  • Experience in public school settings
  • Experience and willingness to engage in both in-person and online instruction

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to publish scholarly articles based on research and professional practice
  • Ability to pursue grants and other sponsored program activities
  • Broad knowledge of the special education scholarly discipline
  • Skills in the delivery of effective in- college-level special education teaching
  • Knowledge of contemporary special education practice in multi-tiered educational environments
  • Knowledge of contemporary special education practice in behavioral support in a classroom environment
  • Knowledge of contemporary special education practice in positive behavior interventions and supports
  • Knowledge of appropriate practice in course and program evaluation
  • Knowledge of, ability to develop, and commitment to use emerging technologies and alternative delivery methods appropriately, including online delivery, hybrid course options, content software, web-enhancements, etc.
  • Ability to design learning opportunities that acknowledge, draw upon, and are enriched by student diversity in the learning environment
  • Ability to work collaboratively with university and public school colleagues within a diverse environment
