DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites nominations and applications for an experienced and visionary leader to serve as dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. The dean reports to the provost and executive vice chancellor for academic and student affairs and is a member of the university’s senior management team. The dean will provide outstanding leadership and have primary responsibility for the academic excellence, administration and outreach of the college.

UMass Dartmouth distinguishes itself as a vibrant public research university dedicated to engaged learning and innovative research resulting in personal and lifelong student success. Established in 1895, UMass Dartmouth has developed from its textile roots into a comprehensive research university that offers an array of highly regarded programs in the liberal arts and sciences, marine sciences, engineering, business and the visual and performing arts. UMass Dartmouth is ranked in the top 311 best national universities by U.S. News and World Report and it is the only research university in the state south of Boston. UMass Dartmouth is classified as a Carnegie Community Engaged University and recently achieved a major milestone, being designated as a Carnegie Doctoral Research University.

The dean will be responsible for all aspects of college administration, including personnel hiring and evaluation, student success, academic program development, professional accreditations, strategic planning, internationalization, interdisciplinary collaborations, and fiscal management and efficiency.

The ideal candidate for the College of Arts and Sciences will be an energetic leader and faculty

advocate with a track record of attracting and developing talented and diverse faculty, staff and

students. They will:

  • Have a demonstrated commitment to research excellence and productivity and to innovative curriculum and interdisciplinary teaching methodologies;
  • Demonstrate entrepreneurship, with expertise in resource enhancement and alternate forms of financial support, including private fundraising and grants;
  • Foster opportunities for scholarly and creative activities, as well as community and alumni engagement, promoting multidisciplinary and multicultural programs, and building key partnerships and collaboration both within the College of Arts and Sciences, with the greater UMD community and outside the university.

Qualified candidates must hold an earned doctorate or other appropriate terminal degree and have a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and/or creative accomplishments to qualify for appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure in a department within the college. Successful experience as a university administrator in a leadership role at the department chair level or above is required. It is preferred the dean have a deep understanding of arts and sciences and some familiarity with a broad range of disciplines; demonstrates commitment to diversity with experience enhancing inclusion in the academic setting; effective oral and written communication skills, with a comfortable public presence; proven track record of effective delegation and personnel management and leadership; demonstrates leadership style with an emphasis on openness, consultation and collaboration; Demonstrates commitment to building and be a part of a well-aligned team; demonstrates student-centered focus; experience with current best practices in recruitment and retention; experience with or a desire to be active in fundraising.
