Director, Direct Marketing and Marketing Services

Brown University Division of Advancement

 

The incumbent will oversee the coordination and execution of the direct response marketing strategy for the Advancement Division, with a particular focus on the Brown Annual Fund. S/he will manage the strategies for segmentation, ask amounts, direct marketing, stewardship, and communications with an eye toward growing dollars and strengthening participation. S/he will devise specific plans for communications and mass solicitations that target 100,000 prospects and yield approximately $10 million/year in cash for Brown and approximately 90% of the donors included in Brown’s overall alumni participation rate.

 

S/he will ensure that messaging is appropriately targeted based on population/segmentation and is consistent across all communications and channels. S/he will oversee the mass solicitation strategies and execution for other initiatives, including, but not limited to, the Brown Sports Foundation, School of Public Health Annual Fund, Alumni of Color Initiative, the Brown Medical Annual Fund, and the Office of Planned Giving; ensure that they are coordinated with each other and with the Brown Annual Fund.  

 

S/he will manage the Marketing Services team that executes these solicitations and communications, as well as stewardship, through direct mail, email, phone, web, and digital marketing channels.  


This position reports to the Associate Vice President for Advancement Communications.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of relevant experience (annual giving, fundraising, direct marketing, etc.) and/or equivalent combination of education and experience
    •  Staff management experience required; previous experience managing a direct marketing program preferred.
    •  Strong analytical skills and demonstrated ability to interpret data and use it to drive marketing and/or business decisions. 
    •  Demonstrated excellent written and oral communications skills; experience with developing/delivering persuasive communications preferred.
    •  Demonstrated knowledge of computer software necessary to perform the job, including but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheet programs, databases, e-mail programs, and web applications.
    •  Excellent manager of time, projects, and people. Detail-oriented and analytical, but also able to see the “big picture.”  Must possess a positive attitude and leadership ability.
    •  Self-motivation, creativity, and the ability to solve problems; ability to work cooperatively with others.
    •  Commitment to and understanding of unrestricted fundraising strongly preferred.
