Department of Africana & Latino Studies

Assistant Professor - African American History

The Department of Africana and Latino Studies (ALS) at the State University of New York College at Oneonta invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of African American History beginning Fall 2018. The home department for the position is ALS. Expectations include working closely with both ALS and History Departments, teaching, research, student advisement, college and departmental service, and continuing professional development, and a commitment to excellence in scholarship and teaching. Located in the hills of Central New York, SUNY Oneonta is a mid-size, public, liberal arts and sciences college with a pre-professional focus. The College enrolls approximately 6,000 students in a wide variety of bachelor’s degree programs and a number of graduate certificates and degrees. The ALS Department, with twenty-six majors and eight department members, was founded forty years ago as one of a handful of programs in the United States to integrate and maintain the intersections of Black and Latino Studies. It incorporates into its courses new scholarship from critical race studies, social theory, gender studies, sexuality studies, cultural studies, and ethnic studies. The Department has a strong history of excellence in teaching, faculty-student mentoring, and continued contact with alumni. Many students take courses at the upper-division level in the Department out of pure interest and more than half of those in each class are non-majors. To learn more about the College or the Department, please visit www.oneonta.edu or www.oneonta.edu/academics/africlat/. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with diverse populations and/or teaching pedagogies and/or multicultural teaching experience.
