The Department of History seeks to hire a post-doctoral research scholar in U.S. history for a grant-funded project to create web-based interactive historical maps of New York City in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Position to begin July 1, 2018 and no later than Sept. 1, 2018. This is a one-year position and is renewable for up to three additional semesters.

The successful candidate will report to the Department of History faculty principal investigator of the project and will be part of a collaborative team between the Department of History and the Center for Spatial Research in the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation that will create the maps.  He/she/they will teach two courses a year, one in urban, immigration, or other related field of history; and one that is directly linked to research for the mapping project; and will serve as project manager for the mapping project, including supervising its day to day operations, the work of graduate and undergraduate assistants, and the developer who will be responsible for building the web components of the project.

Qualifications:  PhD in hand by July 1, 2018 or September 1, 2018, and experience with historical GIS-based research and methodology design. Candidates should have familiarity with some, but not necessarily all, of the following concepts: GIS data types; projections and coordinate systems; address locators; geospatial databases; geoprocessing operations. Willingness to learn latest software tools and to work collaboratively are essential.
