Position Announcement: Assistant Professor of African American Literature

 

The Department of English at the University of Tennessee—Chattanooga invites applications for an Assistant Professor of African American literature specializing in the broader Antebellum era. Teaching opportunities will also include courses in colonial, early republic, and romantic periods. Appointment will begin August 1, 2018.

 

A successful candidate will pursue an active research and publication agenda while contributing to the vibrant intellectual culture of the department. Teaching requirements are 3-3 and include undergraduate and graduate courses in literature and general education, as well as directing M.A. theses. Service on departmental and university-wide committees is also required. We strongly encourage applications from individuals under-represented in the profession.

 

Qualifications:

 

Ph.D in English. Individuals who are ABD will be considered for faculty positions at UTC, however, the degree must be awarded within twelve months of the first semester of employment.

 

Desired qualifications include:

 

  • A record of outstanding classroom instruction
  • A willingness to engage in a variety of instructional modalities, including online instruction
  • A demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching
  • Scholarship and/or publications in area of specialization
  • A record of departmental citizenship
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion efforts
  • Excellent written, interpersonal, and oral communication skills
