The Department of Gender Studies at Central European University invites applications for a fulltime Assistant Professor in the field of Gender and Migration with specialization in the Middle East and North Africa. We seek a scholar whose research and teaching applies post- or decolonial feminist perspectives to issues of migration, refugees, and other topics related to contemporary struggles centered on Islam and the Middle Eastern region.

While we do not require a specific disciplinary background, we prefer a scholar trained in social scientific approaches with a strong background in gender studies and/or feminist theory and the ability to incorporate scholarship from across disciplinary boundaries in their research, teaching, and mentoring. Expertise in visual analysis or new media is a plus but not required.

Duties and responsibilities:

The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to teach MA level courses in their area(s) of expertise, including gender and migration and gender and the politics of the Middle East/Islam, as well as one or more of the department’s required courses in the methods and methodologies of interdisciplinary gender studies, Foundations in Gender Studies, or academic writing and thesis preparation. The successful candidate will also show an ability to supervise a range of MA and PhD thesis projects with differing connection to the applicant’s own research agenda. Overall, we seek a congenial colleague with an active, interdisciplinary research agenda and demonstrated excellence in research and teaching in an English language academic environment, preferably at the graduate level.

Fulltime teaching equals to 12 credits (1 credit equals to 600 teaching minutes), it is typically two or three courses per term, depending on credit distribution, plus thesis supervision.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have been awarded a Ph.D. by August 31, 2018.

Compensation

We offer a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience as well as a dynamic and international academic environment. The initial contract is for 4 years with the possibility of renewal and promotion.
