The Writing Program at New York University Shanghai is pleased to invite applications for the inaugural Emerging Writer Teaching Fellowship in Creative Writing. In addition to core first- and second-year writing courses, the Writing Program offers a creative writing minor, and a robust culture of readings and student engagement in the literary arts. The Emerging Writer Fellow will teach a 2:1; all classes will be creative writing workshops. The writer is expected to undertake research and writing for a current project-in-development. The writer must be in residence in Shanghai for the duration of each semester and should participate actively in the literary life of the university, including one or more public readings.

An MFA or PhD in creative writing with at least one book published or under contact with a reputable press, or a produced play or film is required. Writers with expertise in any genre or combination of genres may apply. The successful candidate has a proven record of excellence in teaching university-level creative writing. We are especially interested in candidates whose writing projects require research in the Asia-Pacific region, although this is not a requirement. We do seek individuals who are flexible, outgoing, and enthusiastic about participating in a growing university writing community, open to new environments, and respectful of diverse backgrounds and learning styles.

We provide a competitive salary, benefits, and a housing stipend. The fellowship lasts nine months, beginning in mid-August 2018; contracts are non-renewable.

Applications are due on January 15th, 2018.

 Required application materials:

  • A cover letter, which explains your current writing project(s) and your interest in the fellowship and in Shanghai;
  • A statement of your teaching philosophy;
  • A current CV;
  • A writing sample (10-20 pages).
  • A recommendation letter that speaks to your teaching.
