POSITION

San Diego State University is seeking a Director of the School of Music and Dance to provide visionary leadership and strong advocacy for an academic program dedicated to interdisciplinary collaboration in creative and research activities, traditional and progressive approaches to arts education, and active engagement with the diverse community of Southern California.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will bring a record of effective administrative leadership in an academic setting, outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, experience in budgetary planning and curricular assessment, and the ability to advocate for the areas of music and dance both within the university as well as in the San Diego community. He/she will have a professional profile that warrants appointment at the rank of Full Professor in accordance with the stated mission of the School of Music and Dance. A terminal degree in a relevant field is required, although candidates with an appropriate advanced degree and exceptional professional experience may also be considered.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director represents the School of Music and Dance to the college, the university, and the community at regional, national, and international levels. The Director is responsible for strategic planning; faculty recruitment, mentoring, and evaluation; managing budgets for instruction, equipment, and revenue; leading curriculum development and assessment; managing the administrative staff; and overseeing music and dance facilities. The Director also has a leadership role in fundraising and is expected to develop and maintain professional relationships within and outside the university.

 

SALARY & RANK

The appointment will be at the rank of Full Professor with tenure, and the salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

 

THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC AND DANCE

The School of Music and Dance at SDSU (www.musicdance.sdsu.edu) offers programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Arts in Dance, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance, and Master of Music degrees, as well as an undergraduate Performer’s Certificate, a graduate Artist Diploma, and academic minors in Classical Music, Electronic Music, Elementary Music, Jazz, and Somatic Studies. Currently the School is composed of 15 tenured or tenure-track faculty, 36 full-time and part-time lecturers, 14 studio artist instructors (including a resident string quartet and leading members of the San Diego Symphony), and an administrative staff of 11. The School of Music and Dance is an important contributor to the efforts and continued success of Arts Alive SDSU, a campus-wide strategic initiative housed within the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts that is designed to elevate the role of arts events and arts practices as an integral part of the university experience.
