Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Digital Humanities (Ref.: 201701452)

The Faculty of Education is ranked number 4 among the top Education faculties worldwide by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for Education 2018. Digital Humanities (DH) is a nascent field of academic scholarship that has arisen as an extension to the knowledge, skills, methods and tools traditionally used in the study of humanities. DH contributes to contemporary humanities scholarship through new modes of knowledge creation enabled by computational tools, methodologies and networked, digital environments. It is collaborative and transdisciplinary in nature, building on the foundational concepts and tools in information, technology, media and communication, with design as an integral part of its “intellectual method”.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in information management, digital humanities, or one of the core-humanities/social science disciplines such as linguistics and sociology. They should have demonstrated experience with digital humanities tools and methodologies, a strong commitment in addressing social and behavioral science related questions, as well as interest in developing pedagogical and e-learning programs for students across the campus, particularly for Common Core Courses at undergraduate level.  The appointee will be expected to (i) offer courses on human development through the lens of digital humanity; (ii) contribute to interdisciplinary/cross-Faculty research in digital citizenship; (iii) develop an e-learning infrastructure and pedagogical designs so that students in different programmes can be given the opportunities to master DH methods for creative expressions in diverse cross-media platforms; (iv) supervise postgraduate research students; (v) engage in knowledge exchange initiatives involving DH; and (vi) take up administrative duties as required.

Applicants should send a completed application form, an up-to-date C.V., and a teaching and research statement to the Faculty at edufach@hku.hk . For academic questions about the position, please contact Professor Liaquat Hossain, Head of the Division of Information & Technology Studies, Faculty of Education at lhossain@hku.hk .

A globally competitive remuneration package commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, as well as annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The appointments will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.  Information about the Faculty can be obtained at http://www.hku.hk/education .

Application form (341/1111) can be downloaded at http://www.hr.hku.hk/apptunit/form-ext.doc . Further particulars can be obtained at http://jobs.hku.hk .  Shortlisted candidates may be invited to attend an interview.  Closes December 15, 2017.
