Assistant Professor, Fiction

The Writer’s Workshop of the University of Nebraska at Omaha invites applications for a tenure-track position in fiction, with a secondary expertise in one or more of the following areas: creative nonfiction, screenwriting, creative writing for new media, hybrid forms, alternate narrative forms, translation, and/or digital writing.  Based on the studio model of instruction, the Writer’s Workshop offers the BFA degree in creative writing with tracks in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and/or screenwriting. This is a nationally recognized undergraduate program within a School of the Arts, which includes Theatre and Art & Art History. For over four decades, the Writer’s Workshop has sponsored an annual reading series, through the years hosting Carl Phillips, Dorianne Laux, Monique Truong, Gregory Pardlo, Charles D’Ambrosio, Erin Belieu, James McBride, among others. An innovative student-edited literary and arts journal, 13th Floor, is published in digital and print editions. 

The teaching load is two courses per semester and includes undergraduate fiction studios at the basic, intermediate, and/or advanced levels; and courses in the secondary area as needed. There is the opportunity to design and teach Form & Theory 4000-level seminars, and to direct Senior Thesis projects.

The successful candidate will also administer the University of Nebraska low-residency MFA in Writing program, which involves staffing, marketing, and coordination of two ten-day residencies—one in summer, the other in winter—as well as other administrative duties. 

Required Qualifications:  MFA or PhD in fiction, one full-length book of fiction published by a nationally recognized press, and substantial publications in a secondary area.  Must have university-level teaching experience, arts administration experience, and a commitment to undergraduate and graduate education in a fine-arts setting.

Starting date is August 2018.
