Assistant or Associate Professor in Geospatial Analyses and Techniques

The Department of Geography at Virginia Tech is seeking applicants for a tenure-track or tenured position in geospatial analysis and techniques at the assistant or associate level. Full information concerning the department and university can be found at: https://geography.vt.edu/ and https://vt.edu/. We seek a candidate specializing in the theory and application of geospatial analyses and techniques including GIS and/or remote sensing, or other cutting edge geospatial domains. Individuals must have their PhD in Geography or in a closely related discipline by the time of the August 2018 appointment. The candidate must be able to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in GIS and/or remote sensing and supervise graduate students in our MS program and the interdisciplinary PhD program in Geospatial and Environmental Analysis based in the department’s home College of Natural Resources and Environment (https://cnre.vt.edu). Evidence of an established research track in geospatial theory or applications must be provided. We seek an energetic faculty member committed to excellence in teaching and research. Development of a strong, externally funded research program and publication record is essential for success at Virginia Tech. The specific research specialty is open, but preference will be given to candidates who can strengthen our teaching and research portfolio within one or more of the following areas: spatio-temporal modeling and/or simulation, big data analytics, geospatial data mining, geocomputation, and geovisualization. Preference will also be given to candidates with experience and expertise in both GIS and remote sensing. The ability to bring to the department new application areas is welcome as well as enhancing existing department strengths in geospatial science, atmospheric science, biogeography, hazards, human-environment interactions, land change science, medical geography, sustainability, urban geography, and water.

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to engage in transdisciplinary research, curriculum and outreach initiatives with other university faculty working in the Data & Decisions destination area, one of several new university-wide initiatives at Virginia Tech (http://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas.html). Data & Decisions is focused on advancing the human condition and society with better decisions through data. Faculty collaborating in this area integrate data analytics and decision sciences across the transdisciplinary research and curriculum efforts at Virginia Tech. Candidates with demonstrated experience in teaching or research that aligns with the Data and Decisions vision (http://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas/da-overview/da-data.html) are especially encouraged to apply.

Virginia Tech recognizes the critical importance of diverse teams of scholars. It seeks to diversify its faculty along multiple dimensions, including those that have been historically marginalized and excluded. Virginia Tech is a public land‐grant university, committed to teaching and learning, research, and outreach to the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world. Building on its motto of Ut Prosim (that I may serve), Virginia Tech is dedicated to serving in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence—InclusiveVT. We seek candidates who adopt and practice efforts to increase access and inclusion to create a community that nurtures learning and growth for all of its members. Virginia Tech actively seeks a broad spectrum of candidates to join our community in preparing leaders for the world.

Interested persons must apply at http://jobs.vt.edu, posting number TR0170167, where they will submit a two-three page cover letter highlighting research and teaching experience and interests, current curriculum vitae, two recent writing samples, teaching evaluations (if available), and contact information for three references. Review of applications will begin December 4, 2017 and continue until the positions is filled. Inquiries can be made to Dr. Yang Shao, Search Committee Chair, Department of Geography, 113 Major Williams Hall, Blacksburg, VA 20061. Email: yshao@vt.edu. Phone: (540) 231-1867.
