The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University seeks a dynamic and visionary faculty member to serve as Chair of the Conservatory's Liberal Arts Department, beginning Fall 2018. The Liberal Arts Department develops critical thinking, writing, and oral communication skills while fostering social awareness and responsibility in a community of exceptional undergraduate artists. Our international students, over one-third of the student population, are served by the department's offerings in English as a Second Language.

In addition to teaching courses in the department, the chair will lead the department to integrate its program within the Conservatory's new “Breakthrough Curriculum” designed to develop 21st century leaders in the arts. The department chair will work creatively with colleagues to connect the humanities curriculum with student academic support initiatives. Pressing challenges include reconfiguring our first-year program and fostering effective innovations in teaching, such as project-based learning and digital pedagogy. Information about our current department may be found at http://peabody.jhu.edu/academics/instruments-areas-of-study/liberalarts/.

Located in the heart of Baltimore’s Mount Vernon Cultural District, the Peabody Institute was founded in 1857 as America’s first academy of music. Today, through its degree-granting Conservatory and its community-based Preparatory music and dance school, Peabody trains musicians and dancers of every age and at every level. Each year Peabody stages nearly 1000 major public concerts and performances. Peabody is one of the nine divisions of the Johns Hopkins University.

A review of applications will begin on November 1, 2017, after which time additional materials may be requested.
