The Department of Art and Design in the College of Arts and Letters at the University of Tampa invites applications for a tenure-track appointment as Assistant or Associate Professor in Art and Design to begin in August 2018. The position will contribute to the BFA in Graphic Design.

 

The University of Tampa is a medium-sized, comprehensive, residentially-based private institution of 8,913 undergraduate and graduate students. The University is ideally situated on a beautiful 110-acre campus next to the Hillsborough River, adjacent to Tampa's dynamic central business district, which is a growing, vibrant, diverse metropolitan area. Teaching load is 12 semester hours (3 four-credit classes) in a 15-week semester. Teaching assignment will include both lower and upper-division courses within the Graphic Design BFA program. Faculty members are expected to engage in service activities at all levels of the university and provide academic and professional   advice to students. The candidate is expected to demonstrate skills in development tools, software and related languages as well as solid design principles and visual aesthetics with a critical understanding of user experience, print design and conceptual thinking.

 

The successful candidate will demonstrate a dynamic studio practice and a record of professional accomplishments commensurate with a depth of experience in the field. Candidates should be versed in a wide range of traditional and experimental Graphic Design practices as well as the critical issues/discourse impacting contemporary design and culture. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a clear design and pedagogical vision and the ability to balance professional practice while maintaining a strong commitment to teaching.

 

The successful candidate will join a department of nine full-time faculty members committed to excellence in teaching and fostering a strong research culture. Faculty in Art and Design are committed to engaging collaboratively with colleagues within the department as well as across disciplines. The successful applicant will demonstrate historical knowledge and contemporary skills in the area of graphic design.

Required Qualifications

Must have an MFA or other terminal degree in Graphic Design and an active record in the profession. The candidate must demonstrate scholarly and professional activities that make a significant contribution and reflect a high standard of excellence in teaching, research, and pedagogy. A background in the historic, cultural and social evolution of Graphic Design and Typography, from both a technical and artistic perspective is desired. The successful candidate is required to maintain office hours, advise students, provide service to the college, university, community, and the profession, and perform all other duties as assigned.
