NYU Shanghai
NYU Shanghai is seeking to hire visiting and permanent faculty (non tenure-track) in the areas of creative practice and critical scholarship to join its program in Interactive Media Arts (IMA), an undergraduate liberal arts major in the application and theory of interactive media.
IMA combines practice-based and scholarly work in order to explore the social and cultural possibilities of emerging media. Our studio curriculum combines the development of software, the manipulation of digital media, the design and fabrication of material objects, and the construction of virtual and physical spaces. Our seminars relate to theoretical study of the history, philosophy, and politics of emerging media.
Faculty positions are for between 1 and 3 years, with the possibility of renewal. Compensation and terms of employment are comparable to U.S. institutions and include faculty housing or subsidies.
Responsibilities
Faculty teach two courses per semester, one core and one elective. In addition, they provide office hours to students, and participate in program and school-wide initiatives and committees. Teaching experience, a commitment to undergraduate education, and enthusiastic dedication to this rapidly growing and evolving program are essential.
The core classes required of IMA majors are our foundation
courses, Interaction Lab (http://ima.nyu.sh/interaction-lab/),
which introduces students to computer programming, electronics and
interaction design, and Communications Lab (http://ima.nyu.sh/communications-lab/),
which introduces students to digital media production including
imaging, sound, video and the Web, as well as a Senior Capstone
Studio (http://ima.nyu.sh/capstone-studio/).
Prior electives offered at IMA include: Animation: Traditional
Techniques & Contemporary Practices, Collaborative Design,
Collective Methods, Creating Immersive Worlds, Developing Web,
Digital Farm, Generating & Expressing Data, Generative
Language, Interactive Documentaries, Introduction to Robotics,
Making Maker Education, Minimum Viable Product, Nature of Code,

Street Food & Urban Farming, Solar Solutions: Considering the
Sun in our Digital Futures, Talking Fabrics, This is the Remix, Toy
Design and Prototyping, Unmanned Aerial Storytelling, User
Experience Design, and VR/AR Fundamentals.
In addition to teaching established core and elective classes, faculty are also highly encouraged to develop their own elective courses.
Qualifications
Candidates must have a terminal degree (MFA, MPS, or PhD) as well as a minimum of two years full-time teaching or equivalent professional experience. Candidates should also have published work in a discipline related to the theory and practice of emerging media and / or an established record of creative practice with publicly exhibited work in related fields.
