DEAN, COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES
Eastern Michigan University (Eastern) invites applications and
nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and
Sciences. Eastern seeks a collaborative and inspirational leader to
articulate a clear vision for the College, advocate for its core
academic mission, and acquire the resources necessary to ensure its
continuing development.
Named a “Best Midwestern College” by Princeton Review and
recognized for its commitment to campus diversity by U.S. News
and World Report: America’s Best Colleges, Eastern enrolls
approximately 23,000 students from 45 states and more than 70
foreign countries. Located minutes from Ann Arbor, the University
offers more than 200 majors in five colleges, and recently
completed a $90 million science complex – one of the largest public
construction projects in the state of Michigan.
The College of Arts and Sciences provides a foundation for
creative, critical thinking with a dynamic curriculum in order to
prepare students to thrive in an ever-changing world. The College
promotes an integrated education in the arts, humanities, social
and natural sciences and it aims to equip students, faculty and
staff for local and global community engagement and scholarship and
serves as a catalyst for creativity, critical thinking and
interdisciplinary collaboration. Its goal is to foster knowledge
and curiosity for lifelong learning and promote skills to develop
and contribute positively to the community. The College of Arts and
Sciences offers 191 programs and 18 degrees at the undergraduate
and graduate levels.
Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President, the Dean is
the College’s chief academic, executive, and fiscal officer and a
member of the University’s academic leadership team. The Dean has
responsibility for an annual operating budget of $60 million and an
academic enterprise including approximately 700 full- and part-time
faculty members, some 7,700 undergraduate and graduate students, 18
departments, and two specialized programs listed here: http://www.emich.edu/cas/departments/index.php.
The Dean will guide the academic and business planning of the
College, advocate for its interests within and outside the
University, engage and serve the local and regional educational
community, and work to increase the College’s national visibility
and to secure the resources necessary to fulfill its
ambitions.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Earned Doctorate or appropriate terminal degree in a discipline represented by the College.
• At least seven years college or university teaching experience required, with a minimum of four years academic leadership or administrative experience in higher education preferred.
• A distinguished academic or professional record of scholarship/creative activity meriting appointment as a Professor with tenure in a discipline in the College.
The preferred candidate will demonstrate the ability to:
•Further Eastern’s mission to enrich lives in a supportive, intellectually dynamic and diverse community.
• Collaborate with faculty to establish a creative vision for the College, building strategically on current areas of distinction.
• Provide leadership for strong undergraduate and graduate programs, fostering opportunities where students learn in and beyond the classroom to benefit the local and global communities.
• Promote academic freedom, shared governance, and faculty and staff input by working successfully within collective-bargaining agreements and supporting our dedicated faculty balance teaching and research to prepare students with relevant skills and real world awareness.
• Advance diversity in the recruitment, retention, and development of high-quality faculty, staff, and students.
• Foster the interdependence of scholarly/creative activity and teaching, supporting faculty- student collaboration in research and artistic projects.
• Cultivate productive relationships between departments and programs in the College, while also facilitating engagement with the College of Education and other colleges and divisions in the University.
• Build relationships with individuals, agencies, and organizations in the surrounding community, while working with the College Resource Development Board to generate and maintain strong external funding bases.
• Administer College resources, manage operations, supervise and evaluate personnel, and oversee budgets and facilities.
