The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) seeks an eminent, strategic, judicious, and collaborative academic leader to serve as its next dean of faculty and vice president of academic affairs.

The school is located in the heart of Chicago, a city defined by an extraordinary and rich diversity, unparalleled architecture, and innovative public art. SAIC is one of the largest accredited independent schools of art and design in the country, enrolling 3,570 degree-seeking students at undergraduate and graduate levels.

SAIC benefits from its unique alignment within the Art Institute of Chicago, a world-class fine arts museum, and is distinguished by its unparalleled multidisciplinary approach to art and design education. Cultivating creativity and innovation, SAIC’s faculty, students, and alumni have extended the school’s influence on contemporary art and design throughout the United States and around the world.

This is an extraordinary opportunity to provide intellectual leadership for a premier school of art and design. Reporting directly to the provost, the successful candidate will be responsible for developing and articulating a compelling vision for art and design education at SAIC and for championing this vision with key constituencies at the local and global level. The dean will oversee the coordination and quality of SAIC’s academic programs, research activities, diversity and inclusion efforts, and related administrative operations. Through their intellectual leadership, the dean is charged with the duty of maintaining SAIC’s high standards of teaching, scholarship, and creative production, while continuing to raise the distinction of the school.

They will support and champion a world class faculty, collaborating with colleagues to steer the course of new curricular opportunities and faculty developments which sustain a robust creative educational environment that engages the imagination of faculty, students, alumni, and partners within and beyond the institution. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate they are an innovative thinker, who has significant administrative experience, an inclusive approach to academic leadership, and a strong record of achievement in a field related to any of SAIC’s programs.
