The Political Science Department of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of assistant professor to begin in August 2018. A completed Ph.D. in political science is preferred; ABD will be considered. Teaching assignments will typically include three courses per semester. The department seeks a broadly trained political scientist who can teach the following courses:

  • Comparative Politics (POLS 223): A sophomore level course that combines teaching introductory comparative politics with an introduction to comparative methods. Students review scholarly literature, form hypotheses in response to political questions, use a variety of methods and tools to gather evidence, and identify criteria for evaluating the quality of evidence. One of the learning goals of this course is to develop library and information literacy skills.

  • Upper division courses in the candidate’s area of interest. Courses in a wide variety of regional or substantive areas in comparative politics will be considered.

  • Introduction to International Relations (POLS 121): Required introductory course to the political science major that provides a brief background of global history, overview of major international relations theories, and guides students through primary actors in global politics through analysis of contemporary questions.

  • First Year Seminar: FYS is a required full-year course for all first year students. It is designed to help students improve their ability to read carefully and think critically about what they read, to write in a variety of academic formats, improve their information literacy, and to develop discussion skills necessary for successful college course work.

The ability to work with interdisciplinary programs such as Latino-Latin American Studies, Asian Studies, or Gender Studies is regarded as an asset. Successful teaching will foster a commitment to diversity as a learning outcome, because it provides students with the skills of intercultural competence and civic responsibility within our increasingly diverse student body.
