The University of Arkansas invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the School of Art. The University has recently received a $120 million transformational gift from the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation to establish a School of Art built from the previous Department of Art in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. The School of Art will remain in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, which is the largest and most academically diverse unit on campus.

Founded in 1871 as a land grant institution, the University of Arkansas is a national research institution located in Northwest Arkansas. Serving more than 27,000 students, the university is the state’s foremost partner and resource for education and economic development.

The Director position provides a transformational opportunity for growth, innovation, and partnership under the direction of a visionary leader. The School of Art will create a signature program that uniquely positions it as the place for the study of and research in American art and the art of the Americas. Because of the strong current faculty, programs, and students, the new Director will have the ability to build from a solid foundation of achievement in the areas of art history, art education, graphic design, and studio art. The School will benefit from proximity, collaboration, and unique partnership with Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

The Director will lead the strategic, programmatic, financial, fundraising, and management operations that support the mission and vision of the School of Art, its role within the University of Arkansas, and engagement with local and global stakeholders. The Director will take the lead in shaping the future of the School, helping to advance and define its standards of excellence, directions of growth, and multi-disciplinary connections across the university and throughout the world. This opportunity requires a builder, a futurist, a storyteller and a results-oriented leader who can develop strong relationships with internal and external constituencies.

The ideal candidate will be a visionary and creative strategist who will build upon the 142-year history of the art program and develop its reputation as a top School of Art regionally, nationally, and internationally. With a desire for art to extend across campus and disciplines, the new Director will demonstrate an appetite for experimentation and innovation including the development of interdisciplinary initiatives through teaching, research, and partnership. Knowledge and appreciation for art history, art education, graphic design and studio art with a demonstrated commitment to building a diverse and inclusive culture is required. The successful candidate should possess a terminal degree from an accredited institution and possess qualifications for appointment as a tenured professor in the School of Art.

Inquiries, nominations, and applications are invited and review will begin immediately. However, the position will remain open until filled. Completed applications received by January 5th, 2018 will be assured full consideration. Late applications will be reviewed as necessary to fill the position. Applications should include a detailed curriculum vitae, a letter of application or statement summarizing experience in higher education and arts administration, personal vision, relevant leadership experience, and the names of references. To ensure full consideration, inquiries, nominations, and applications should be submitted electronically in confidence to: Korn Ferry, Rosa Morris and Ann Kern consultants, at UArkansas-art@kornferry.com
