ASSISTANT / ASSOCIATE / FULL PROFESSOR
IIHCC Cluster

Virginia Tech is strategically investing in hiring innovative faculty to advance its vision to grow beyond boundaries as a premier 21st-century global land-grant institution through our Destination Areas initiative. As interconnected areas of strength, Destination Areas facilitate faculty collaborations that bridge disciplines to create innovative and transformative solutions to global issues, while positioning Virginia Tech as a premier destination for talent that seeks to advance the human condition. More information on Virginia Tech’s Beyond Boundaries vision can be found online (beyondboundaries.vt.edu).

In support of these strategic initiatives, Virginia Tech is recruiting a robust and diverse cluster of faculty interested in contributing to transdisciplinary research, teaching, and/or outreach initiatives that align with our Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities (IIHCC) Destination Area. With commitments in this area from the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, College of Engineering, and College of Science, the university is specifically seeking faculty interested in engaging with research and curricular initiatives that support creativity and problem solving in areas such as smart design and construction, energy, robotics and autonomous vehicle systems, ubiquitous mobility, and materials for a resilient and sustainable infrastructure. Faculty with expertise in disciplinary areas such as Architecture and Smart Technologies, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Regulatory Economics, Infrastructure Sensing and Health Monitoring, Energy Generation and Storage, Autonomous Systems, Robotics, Data-Driven Modeling, Human-Centered Interactive Simulation, or with interdisciplinary backgrounds will be uniquely positioned to help the university advance these efforts.

Virginia Tech recognizes the vital importance of inclusion and diversity for our campus community in achieving excellence in all of our work and study. The university continues to diversify faculty, staff, and students along multiple dimensions, including those that have been historically marginalized and excluded. Through committed university efforts such as AdvanceVT and InclusiveVT (inclusive.vt.edu), the university continues to build institutional and individual commitment to its motto of Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence. Further, we seek scholars who are committed to fostering an environment in which faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and personal experiences are welcomed and can thrive.

The IIHCC Destination Area is focused on bringing visionary humanists and technologists together to create the framework for infrastructure innovation and the reinvention of community. Faculty working together in this area are committed to transdisciplinary solutions that exist along the interdependencies between humans, community, and infrastructure with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life around the globe. Work in this area also embraces equity in the human condition by seeking the equitable distribution and availability of physical safety and well-being, psychological well-being, respect for human dignity, and access to crucial material and social resources throughout the world’s diverse communities. This area further incorporates the Materials Strategic Growth Area’s mission to innovate the future of manufacturing from atoms to systems through integrated discovery of materials, processes, and technologies while serving society through novel and resilient products and jobs creation, with transdisciplinary approaches to addressing critical scientific materials challenges in the research areas of health, energy, environment, and resilient infrastructure. Finally, the area explores policymaking and policy analysis, collaborating at the intersection of scientific evidence, governance, and analyses to translate scholarship into practice. Visit provost.vt.edu/destination-areas.html for more information about this initiative.

Successful candidates will engage in IIHCC initiatives with other faculty across the university working in this area. As part of the cluster, they will also have opportunities to support curricular and pedagogical advances, advance interdisciplinary research initiatives, and cultivate global outreach initiatives in related areas. Successful candidates will also be expected to teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, depending upon the needs of the hiring department.
