This position reports directly to the President.

APPOINTMENT PERIOD:                              

Twelve-month, annually renewable appointment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:        

The Special Assistant to the President is a professional who works directly to assist and support the President with a wide range of human resource, executive and administrative responsibilities.  The individual will possess vision and energy to complement a dynamic executive team that has made notable progress to advance the institutional direction.   This is an administrative role that operates closely with and at the direction of the President with a range of staff responsibilities  to include, but are not limited to the following:

SPECIFIC DUTIES:         

  1. Supports the President on future focused and high-priority College initiatives and handles assigned projects;
  2. Serves as a liaison for the President for a variety of internal and external constituencies including state and national legislative bodies;
  3. Supports and attends the President’s executive meetings and works with other members of the College community on events, functions and initiatives as assigned;
  4. Supports the President with the coordination of activities with College personnel and provides support with the preparation of materials for the meetings of the Board of Trustees;
  5. Identifies, researches, and provides input to the President on matters as assigned including involvement with budgets, strategic planning, shared governance, and day to day operations;
  6. Serves as the liaison to the Shared Governance process in organizing the College’s policies and procedures;
  7. Conducts research on emerging educational, political & economic topics and develops briefings & drafts reports and correspondence for the President;
  8. Supports the President in developing agendas & minutes for meetings and prepares or secures materials to advance the College’s priorities, mission and goals;
  9. Researches potential funding & external grant opportunities and assists in drafting proposals, applications and other correspondence at the direction of the President;
  10. Researches, compiles and prepares various data for reports and analysis;
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

MAJOR WORK QUALIFICATIONS:           

Master’s degree required in higher education, public policy, business administration or related academic discipline.  Minimum of seven years mid-to senior level, progressively responsible administrative experience required within an academic environment preferred.   Experience in higher education required.  The incumbent must possess high ethical standards and demonstrate excellent organizational, conflict resolution, communication and interpersonal skills; understanding of policy development and the culture and organization of an academic institution; ability to manage high-priority projects simultaneously; awareness of the importance and sensitivity of the presidential liaison function.  Must have a background which demonstrates the high energy level required by the position; the ability to assume responsibility and work both independently and as a member of an institutional team; and the ability to utilize technology resources (word, spreadsheets and presentation software).  Must have the ability to work collaboratively to collect, organize and analyze data and develop information in a concise, logical and timely manner; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external constituencies of the College; and possess the ability to further the College’s commitment to multiculturalism & diversity.    Must be able to adapt quickly to change and work flexible hours to meet the needs of the position.  A broad knowledge of commitment to higher education and the mission of Rhodes State College is a must.
