PRESIDENT
Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) invites
nominations and applications for the position of President.
Reporting directly to the Board of Trustees, the President
exercises broad responsibilities for the STEM-focused academic,
research, student, financial, and administrative dimensions of the
institution. Michigan Tech seeks a dynamic, entrepreneurial, and
transformative leader to work with the entire University community
to advance its mission of creating a just, prosperous, and
sustainable world.
Michigan Tech began as the Michigan Mining School in the town of
Houghton in 1885. Established by the state of Michigan to train
mining engineers to better operate the local copper mines, the
School began its journey with four faculty members and 23 students
on the second floor of the former Houghton Fire Hall.
Today, Michigan Tech is a public research university that is home
to more than 7,000 students from 60 countries around the world.
Michigan Tech’s rising national profile is highlighted by its $72.5
million in research expenditures, an exceptional track record in
commercialization produced by distinguished faculty, and 19 major
research centers where students can invent, design, code, create,
and compete. The University offers more than 120 undergraduate and
graduate degree programs in science, technology, engineering, and
math (STEM); forestry; business and economics; health professions;
humanities; and social sciences.
The University’s beautiful 925-acre campus is located in Michigan’s
Upper Peninsula overlooking the Keweenaw Waterway and just a few
miles from Lake Superior. Safewise ranked Houghton
and Michigan Tech 20th on its list of 50 Safest College Towns in
America and BestColleges.com recognized Michigan Tech’s commitment
to a high-quality and affordable education by ranking the
University 18th in the country for return on
investment. U.S. News & World Report ranks
Michigan Tech 118th in the National Universities category and 56th
in the Public Universities category. In Money
magazine’s latest report on “Best Colleges for Your Money,”
Michigan Tech ranked in the top 100 overall and in the top 50 among
public universities.
Position and Qualifications: As the leader and
chief executive officer of Michigan Tech, the President exercises
broad responsibilities for all aspects of the institution, inspires
and guides members of the campus community, and serves as its chief
representative externally, championing Michigan Tech’s preeminence
in STEM education. The next President will demonstrate the
imagination, courage, and capability to develop and advance an
innovative vision, provide new ideas to move the institution
forward, and leverage the unique qualities of Michigan Tech to
sustain its position as a leading research institution with a focus
on experiential learning.
The ideal candidate will have, among other qualities: outstanding
leadership and team-building experience coupled with the ability to
mentor current leadership at the institution; a demonstrated
commitment to the student experience; an appreciation for the
mission and distinctive qualities of Michigan Tech; the academic or
equivalent background in teaching and scholarship to lead a
doctoral-granting academic institution; the experience and skills
to manage and guide a complex and dynamic STEM-focused university;
superb communication skills; a strong record of aligning budgets
with strategic goals, allocating resources effectively, and setting
financial priorities; demonstrated experience in diversifying
revenue streams, developing partnerships with industry, and
enhancing philanthropic giving; the ability to advocate for
Michigan Tech with political leaders at the state and national
level and with community leadership; demonstrated ability to
support and advance research initiatives; a commitment to
innovation and creativity; a collaborative leadership approach at
all levels; the ability to engage with the academic community;

transparency and collegiality; a record of achievement in and
commitment to building and sustaining a diverse and inclusive
environment; respect for faculty and staff ideas and decisions; and
the ability to engender trust and support from the full University
community. Additionally, the candidate of choice will have the
highest integrity; be able to develop, communicate, and execute a
clear vision; have the capacity to inspire others to elevate their
contributions to Michigan Tech’s mission; and possess a balance of
confidence and humility, optimism, passion, and
approachability.
